Compute the price!, Roy Cooke, 15. Sep 2003 08:12

Compute the price on all your plays. It is a very important concept in all plays and will help you gain feel. When analyzing a play count the bets and the expectation you gain/lose form them. Think in terms of expectation. When considering a call with a hand that you think may be second best determine the implied price you are receiving from the pot. This includes the chance that your hand will win, the propensity (include texture of opponents) of winning extra money over what is already in the pot, the true price of the call including the possibility it will get raised behind you. When determining if you should call without the best hand take into consideration the chance that the hand you are drawing to will not be good. Even if there is a small chance that your hand will not be good, you must increase your odds required to make the call considerably.

Roy,
Would you mind taking a fictional hand and working out that analysis?

For example
You hold 10sJs button
4 limpers (counting you and the blinds see the flop)
Folp
10c Qs Ks
It is a check, a bet, and a raise to you?

Roy is going to ask you questions about the texture of the game in general , the players, who the limpers are , how they play when they hit certain hands, when they miss. are they on tilt? are you on tilt? are they winning are you winning? will they pay off if another Suit comes and When for how much.
etc.etc. ad nausium

This one won't lean too much on the infamous "it depends". Roy is going to make it three bets on the flop. Let me recommend Real Poker - The Cooke Collection or the sequels. Even after a single reading of this book, you'll know what you are seeking.

Hi

Timmer is right....I am going to need MUCH more information and then it is only a subjective best judgment.....That said, you need to be aware of the concept in ALL your poker decisions...What price is this pot laying me.....If you compute that on all hands...You will gain feel for situations quickly...If you analyze your opponents hands you will gain feel even quicker.

Roy,
Thanks for the reply ,but this specific hand is arbitrary. I was wondering if you would work out that analysis on 'any' given or even fictional hand. I wanted to see your thoughts; to see if I was missing anything in my analysis of the hands I'm playing. I know I often make decisions too fast at a poker table and am in the process of working this type of tool into my game to save or make bets in critical situations.
If you have already worked out a sample somewhere I'm more than willing to go look it up if you will head me in the right direction.
Thanks
Will

definite 3-bet here regardless of the texture of the game. You have an open end str8 flush draw and a pair, so potentially as many as 20 outs to win the pot. So, even with only 1 opponent, you are close to getting 1 to 1 on your money for every bet you put in. No doubt, I raise this hand every chance I get.
