| Tonight I played in a tourney, where I couldn't hit any cards, my hands were a joke and I was eaten alive by the blinds...I played super tight, watching my position at all times. Every time I hit the flop with a pair or even 2 pair and bet 3xs, I was called with an all-in or something worse. Was I being bullied and wimping out(typical of a girl like me), or did I fold accordingly? I am still learning lingo and such, so please bear with my ignorance. I didn't place in the money but I did place 78 out of 181...still not bad for me. Was I not aggressive enough? I am learning alot from all of you...your advice means alot. Thanks all! Kimmi:) | ||

| Sometimes you must make things happen for you if you cards are running bad. Maybe buying the blinds, or introducing a raise more often if the table is cautious. Sometimes a player may go over the top of you if they view you as playing too tightly. You must be willing to make a stand at your best opportunities, I.E. with that 2 pair you talked about, if the board wasn't too threatening. Changing you gears if playing tightly is only seeing a downward trend on your chip stack. Like its been said, you must be willing to die, in order that you may live. Don't be afraid to risk it all, this is especially true if your feeling that you just getting miserable draws. It's better to burn out then to fade away. I know all these are cliches but its hard to place anyone on specifics without watching thier game. | ||

| Often times the bullies will be the same people, take note of them, even write them down. that way you will know when to call, and who to check-raise. Check-raise someone once and it often will slow them down. Remember early on in tournaments lots of bad plays are made. Wait for the nuts and ponce.....Good luck! | ||

Hi Kimmi--78 out of 181 is not bad with lousy cards. Dont think of yourself as a girl or a wimp. Think of yourself as a poker player. Be patient in the early rounds, play only quality hands. No one wins without cards, but many lose with them. Keep playing, keep learning one day the cards will come and you'll be a genius Good Luck --Gary > > > | ||

| Aggressiveness is good, but if you are really running bad, especially in a limit tourney, there might not be much you can do. For example, I've become a winner at the small tourney's at my local B&M, and yesterday I tried to play one. This is a tournament that I've won or made the final table quite a few times. Yesterday, I busted out around 60th out of 80. I didn't see a pocket pair, AK or AQ, for six rounds of tournament play. It must've been well over a hundred hands and the best thing I saw was AJo. The problem with having such a bad run is that you get short stacked and then you cannot make any moves at the pot because you KNOW they will call. Also, even though there is no scientific basis for when a cold streak will end, people get it in their minds that you are running bad, and they will call you with less and try to bust you. Basically, you are wearing a big bulls-eye on your forehead when you are shortstacked. The best thing often is to just wait for the best hand you think you are going to get before being blinded out, and go with it saying a silent prayer to the poker gods. In NL, sometimes you can steal pots just by putting on a lot of pressure ala Gus Hansen, or you can just go all-in with a hand that may not be great, but does OK heads up (which a big raise will often accomplish). Anyway, I think it's easier to stay alive in NL with no hands if you pick your spots well since most pots are heads-up or three-way action. Stealing is easier too, when you aren't limited to just one BB for your raise. Good luck in the future! Don't let running bad for one tourney discourage you, even world champions sometimes bust out early. | ||
