sealing the deal, EC, 13. Sep 2003 22:10

I played two satellites tonight at Commerce for their NL tourney, in both I was fortunate enough to get down to heads up play before my ass was sent back downstairs to play Go Fish. Here's my question:

Clearly, aggression is the name of the game and odds go out the window when heads up in a tourney (satellite or not), but are there any specific nuggets of wisdom out there? With the blinds so extraordinarily high (at the second table the blinds went to 400/800 and there was only T3000 between us) it seems like a crapshoot where any two halfway decent cards are treasured and for pocket pairs I'd need to change my pants. Any good advice for dealing with the heads up situations?

Thanks

Eli

If anything comes your way just halfway decent, I would push all-in every time if I could, and just pray! (that was awful advice, wasn't it?...sorry.

you said it yourself...aggression. heads up when the blinds are big. Be the first to act. Bet if first. Bet to any check. Respect a raise, unless your strong.

Being aggressive is key. Never* call the BB when you are SB, If you are gonna play - raise!

If you are up against an inexperienced short hand opponent (you'll know when he folds more than one or two hands in a row), you should vary between going all-in and 3-4 time raise the BB bet. Both have their advantages, all-in hopefully lets you take it down, 3-4 time bet lets you make a stab (steal) on the the flop. Regardless of what hits the flop you should try to take it with a bet from 1-2 times the minimum bet.

If your opponent just calls your BB, you should definitely all-in your stack in most cases, as it's very likely your opponent doesn't call your raise. If his hand was decent he woulda raised himself.

* I stray from my "never" when I hold a monster hand(AA, KK or other goodies) vs. weaker players. My opponent should have known by now I raise with almost everything, and I have yet to experience anyone who haven't upped their BB to all-in when I just call their BB, thinking they can push me off the hand.

I'm by all means no expert on this subject, but my experience comes from playing NL SNG's (30+3 and 50+5) on PP for 6-7 weeks, in which time I've increased my roll from approx. 400$ to 2400$ playing the bully (even with considerable short stacks) when down to heads up or three handed.
