HELP!!!!, kimmi690, 13. Sep 2003 16:58

So I win a few tournaments last night and got about $60. Excellent for me, because it was free....Anyhoo...I thought I would try and play at a low limit table, .25/.50 pot limit. I got creamed. Played only strong hands and was beat with things like 83 offsuit and 2J offsuit. I can play so well during a tourney, I thought maybe I could handle a real money table, but obviously I can't....I am down $35...am I playing too low a limit, or do I just need to practice at a play money table for a while?

Thanks!
Kimmi

If your playing at low-limit tables like that your bound to get creamed. The people who play at those tables are fish, their going to chase to the river try the higher limit tables. It will be more competitive but the people tend to play much more differently playing mostly only good hands. But you will run into a few fish.

I'd strongly suggest you stick to fixed-limit ring games for starters (at whatever level you feel comfortable with). NL and Pot-Limit are entirely different (and more complex) animals. If you want to dip your toes in the NL and PL waters, I'd stay with the low-dollar SnG's as a beginner.

Hi kimmi,

mkpoker's advice is the way I feel about it, exactly.

As always.....good luck in your games. I hope you find one that best suits your style of play; whether it be limit, no limit, pot limit, or all of the above!

kimmi-

The problem with micro-limits is that players will call all the to the river with bad hands more often, so you will see them get lucky more often. If you are going to play at those limits, you must be prepared for bigger swings. Over the long-haul, you will win, IF you play tight and agressive; punishing them when they don't get lucky. But you will have to accept the swings and live with the frustration of getting sucked-out more often.

I agree with Mozman, Kimmi, I am like you, playing in the micro limits - .25/.50 & .50/$1. I was recently in the hole about $140 and decided to try to battle back - started at the penny tables at UB and saved a bunch of hand histories to analyze and began to see what my mistakes and bonehead plays were. I tightened up my play considerably and became very disciplined - I refused to let a moronic bad beat upset me - I took the attitude that I would get it back, eventually.

I started improving and winning more pots than losing. I gradually worked up to the next limit - experienced some wide swings, but kept analyzing my play, etc., got better and I then moved up to the next limit - same story. I eventually got my money back, but am still experiencing wide swings at the .50/1.00 level - not making huge gains. I will remain there until my play improves to the point that my wins are maximized and losses minimized.

I look at it this way , Kimmi, the micro limit tables are good training - to win you have to be disclplined. It will make you a better player in the long run. Expect dry periods, but when the fishing gets good - play it for all it's worth.

Read and reread everything you can on the subject - there's much to gain from that kind of homework, of course, as well.

Good luck, Kimmi - see you at the tables!

In my experience in the very low limit games everyone sees the flop with almost any 2 cards and when it hits they bet it. This is not good poker IMO.

Be aware of the binds when the pot is not raised. Some blinds will still call with trash hands but some will fold.

I have found that when the BB bets the folp and calls your raise that he has hit the board hard. Mostly with two pair like Q4. So your top pair top kicker AQs is no good unless you improve. Not always the case. I would still take Lee Jones's advice on how to play over mine any day.

I can not win at the micro limits either. I played .5/1 on ParadicePoker and lost lots of money until I quit that site. I have been winning off and on at $3-6 in the card rooms and casino.

Maybe the best way to play these micro limits it to shoot for the nut hands*. I am not sure. I can not give you any good advice since I can't win at those limits either.

Good luck. Remember that all the odds come into play on the River when everyone sees the River. At these limits I don't think anyone would fold on the Turn. Therefore, there are a lot of bad beats (out draws) on the River.

* Lee Jones - Wining Low Limit HOLD'EM. Good book.
