| Hi. I've recently started playing hold'em (Wilson Software), and have red a couple books, too. I feel like I should go online and start playing. Though I don't have alot of money to lose, I'm worried if a go to the small tables (0.50/$1), their play will be real loose, with most seeing the flop even with crap pockets. So, I feel if I jump immediately to 3/6, the play will be tighter, a bit more rational, and I can get better experience. My goal is to be a good player. I'd like to be able to join $200 and $1000 buy-in tourneys with confidence when I feel I'm ready. Please give me advice! Thanks. | ||

Hi glenn, Well I think that if money is a big issue here, than if you chose to play in a $3-6 game, you may lose your bankroll sooner than you anticipate. So, weigh the two things out......play at a higher limit where you may be able to play against players who make more "reasonable" decisions, or.......play in the lower limits (for now).......and play with the people who play really loose, but perhaps your bankroll will last longer. Which of these two choices is more important to you, right now? (psst.....go with the bankroll choice)! The amount of experience that you'll get in the $3-6 games may not be long enough for your bankroll to withstand, therefore, not making much of a difference anyway. You "could" win right away, (and keep adding to that win).......but are you willing to take that risk with the limited funds you have at this point in time? If I were a beginner, I would be playing in the really low limit games....trying to 'get my feet wet' first..........gain some "poker experience".......and then take it from there. There's plenty of time to move up in limits, but it's more important to understand the game first, play with weaker opponents, improve your "own" game, "build your bankroll up" (by protecting it as well), and you'll suddenly start to feel comfortable in the games, and then......you'll be more confident, too! You spoke of being able to play with confidence, and I applaud you for that. You must have confidence when you play poker, and if you chose to play in a limit that best suits your bankroll; that is when you'll be able to apply that confidence, and only then. 4 POKER | ||

| correct 4 poker, he may not survive 3-6. when i first started out in 3-6 it was brutal. i dont care how "tight" you are you will be in for a schooling about how difficult lowlimit poker really is. but u have to learn, so just be prepared to learn , not earn. thats the most important thing new players miss, they play badly or are jusst not up to snuff against the limit they're in and think that because if they win, they're good. focus on longterm skills and eventually you will be rewarded. players need longterm patience and disipline to succeed .... on 13. | I`ve been playing a lot of .05/1 lately the games are very soft. I would recommend starting there with a small bankroll. All the games up to about 5/10 are very loose and aggressive most of the time. So you can win or lose big pretty fast at the 3/6 game. You want about 30 big bets to overcome a severe down swing. I`ve experienced several 1300 .00 swings playing 3/6 . But at the .05/1 limit its not bad at all if you play tight. Bad play is what you want your opponents to be doing and what you learn from it just reinforces your good play. Hope this helps Good luck | ||

| Great, thanks! Yeah - I hate losing money, so I'm generally tight, even for pots that others would scoff at. So - next stupid question - are all online sites generally the same level of tightness/looseness/seriousness? I know the point isn't for site recommendations, but are there ones to avoid as well as ones to gavitite to? What sort of things do sites have that make them more desirable? thanks again (I'm so glad I stumbled across this page) (and if anyone knows any regular limit hold'em games in Italy, please let me know!) | ||

| You may want to look for a site that offers a sign up bonus. Just make sure they have enough players to support the game. | ||

| hi. You will make a number of errors as you learn, and you might as well make thema low limits. Plus, as has been mentioned, the players playing any two are playing badly. While there will definitely be swings when these players hit, you are still playing against bad players. In general, if you cannot beat bad players, you will not be able to beat better ones either. Just play tight, be aggressive when you have an excellent hand, and be patient. You will have lots of time to move up when you have played a few weeks. BarryT | ||
