Here we go again - pot odds - help!, -Sammy, 12. Sep 2003 12:16

I am severely mathmatically challenged and, as such, figuring pot odds vs. hand odds makes my eyes cross and my brain freeze up. Nevertheless, I make the attempts and most times have felt I've been in the ball park on my calculations. I had one of those "you dunce" moments last night when I realized I have probably been miscalulating odds at the turn/river (partially explaining my leaky bankroll). So, I drew myself a "picture" and would like your confirmation (or utter ridicule) as to whether I've got the basics right with the scenario below:

Game is $4/$6 limit hold-em. At the end of pre-flop action there is $24.00 in the pot - offering 6:1 to bet the flop. At the end of flop action there is $32.00 in the pot - offering 5.33:1 to bet the turn. At end of turn action there is $42 in the pot - offering 7:1 to bet the river.

Have I got it?? Thanks for your help!!

The math looks good. The only thing that I would say is that the pot odds are for calling a bet relative to what you are drawing too and not necessarily what you need to value bet "at" a pot (that has more to do with the odds that you make your hand versus the number of callers you can expect).

If I understand then, if I have a 4 flush, the pot needs to be offering, or potentially offering, at least 4.22:1 odds to consider continuing with the hand (47-9 outs=38; 38/9=4.22). Correct? (calculators are my friend)

So, in regard to pot/hand odds, strictly speaking, one should be thinking on the flop, what is my hand, what is it's potential for making, and is there/will there be there enough in the pot to justify continuing? Yes?

....I'm sure this is a no-brainer for most of you, but I am a right-brainer and numbers are basically interesting squiggles on paper for most of us ;-) BUT I love to play poker and am eager to shed my fins!!

Thanks!

Sammy-

Your calculations are correct and your thinking is correct. The only piece missing is that you need to take into account if you make your hand and you still lose. Say you have your 4 flush, but the board is paired. Then, you could hit your hand but lose to a full house. In this situation, you need to adjust your odds necessary to draw upward from 4 to1 (by how much is not necessarily mathematically determinable). Basically, depending on what is on the board is really the key factor:

If the board is 922, then it is less likely that you are already against a full house, so you don't have to adjust your odds that much higher. If the board is JJT, you could already be drawing dead, so it might be right (depending on the preflop and flop action before it gets to you) to throw away your 4-flush regardless of what the pot is laying you.

Hope this helps.

Steve

Sammy, what planet are you writing from????!!!! I have been around
as much as a two dollar 'ho, and have never never never heard of
"4-6 hold 'em!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Are you sure this wasn't a dream, or
a physcotic dellusion!!! (lol)
If this game does indeed exist, then you have computed the pot odds
correctly, but I am confused when you say, "42 to bet the river"

We don't take into account pot odds, when BETTING only when
CALLING.
You bet, if you think one of the following four things may happen:

1 you can get a BETTER hand to FOLD

2 you can get a WORSE hand to CALL

3 you are DRAWING to a BIG hand, and can get many people to
CALL, thus increasing the size of the pot, if you hit.

4 you can gain INFORMATION about your opponents' hands

5 (bonus) you wish to establish a false IMAGE, that you actually
bet bottem pair on a regular basis.

Yes - I pulled the $4/$6 out of the air - I am only concerned with my example on the computation of odds. Sometimes I think I'm from Venus.

I do not understand, though why you don't consider the odds in regard to betting as opposed to calling. Could you please discuss this further?

Well, yes, Mr. Expert - I *do* need to look further - I asked for a discussion on the subject, not a dictation. And, by the way, "arrogent" is spelled "arrogant."
