advice needed short handed vs. a friend, Jordan, 12. Sep 2003 08:33 | ||

| I have a friend who was sitting to my left last night in a small no limit tourney (6 players) we had. He knows I'm a fairly tight player so when the hand gets down to me and him he tends to lean towards being a looser aggressive player. (He's not a maniac and not likely to make huge bluffs vs. more than one player yet he does on occasion). Early on the in the game he would bet out a strong amount and both times he had very strong hands (top 2 pair) and on another hand he hit a full house on the river (he bet hard the whole way through). I have a hard time picking up much on him tell wise other than he does typically raise the pot preflop with strong hands. He just tends to bet really quickly no matter what his hand strength is. Here's the problem. I'll either flop mid or bottom pair on either type of flop 1. all rags (2,5,8) or or one with faces (K, J, 6). I hit a 5 on the first flop and i hit the 6 on the 2nd flop. If I check it seems I'm setting myself up to get bluffed and he'll bet a decent amount (10 chips out of like 60) and I have a hard time calling with these pairs or even Ace high if he has absolutely nothing. Or I'll bet out some chips to see where I'm at to which he'll respond by raising a hefty amount. That happened with the first board. He ended up taking the pot with a pair of 8's when neither of us improved. I checked and called on 4th and 5th street. In the second situation, I folded my bottom pair when he bet out strong after I checked. He later told me he had a king. The ONLY time it seems I ever do well vs. him heads up is if i slowplay big hand, act weak, and then raise him on the river. Anybody have some advice on how I should change up my play and not be so predictable? | ||

| i used to be in the same exact situation... two things 1- heads up if you both call to the end, you should win 50percent of the pots. but you need to remmember winning pots deosnt mean winning the game. you need to win the CHIPS. save chips by not playing absolute rags ex. 72o 84o... And get more chips by check-raising, trapping and slowplaying. Youll bust him out FAST. 2- you need to play mare starting hands. Any pair, any two cards over 9, suited connectors down to 67 (in my experience suited connectors lose value heads up) do this and you should do fine just don't go on tilt... i know it sucks losing -BD | ||
