I have not played many tourneys but I put 200 bucks into ub to get the matching 100 bonus so I have been playing the 1949 ford qualifing tourneys I figure to get a lot of play for a buck. So far I haven't finished above 180th. I was in sixth place chip wise for a while then I had AA and went over the top of a med stack that had went all in got beat with KJ. To cut to the chase what are some good books on NL and limit / NL tourneys I have a lot to learn about tourneys. As always thanks for the help.

I would say Slansky's book on tournaments and a lot of practice !

Whilst you can have a good idea of general strategy, that IMO Slansky provides very well, i would say that the nature of tournaments mean you often have to adept to things and cannot use a set formula to win them ( a new set of problems as opposed to those faced in a regular game) !

Matching your play to the tempo of the tournament is probably the most important ' non cards ' issue.

If you really want to improve your play, write down what happens in the ' big ' hands you are involved in and where you lose / gain the most chips as this helped me no end and helped iron out a lot of faults i had ( my main fault was in NL getting myself commited to 50-50 shots early in the game )

Practice, practice, practice and develop your own fluid style that can adpat to changing game situations will help you get on your way !

I personaly now play and earn as much from NL tournments as i do cash games ( probably because in the UK most games are PL/ NL )

Have fun !

I agree with Chasepoker on the Sklansky book. I feel a good companion to this book is the Tom McEvoy/TJ Cloutier book "Championship Pot-Limit and No-limit Holdem".

I found it easy to read and the important points are hammered home...I find myself repeating many of the major points in my head during tournament play. I feel the combination of the two books have improved my tournament play immensely.

Sklansky's book has some good info in it, especially the chapter on the Gap Concept. However, if I had to choose one book to buy, it would be the "Championship Tournament Practice Hands" by Cloutier and McEvoy. Keep in mind that they are more old school players so some of the recommendations may seem a bit tight. This is a GOOD thing when you are starting out. You can branch out into super-aggro style later if you are so inclined, and if it seems appropriate to the situation.

Their advice is super tight, but that's their whole philosophy. Make sure you're around after everyone else knocks eachother out, and then outplay who's left. Once I started playing closer to their recommendations I've made a lot more final tables of big NL tournaments!

Right, getting there is half the battle. I do tend to open up a bit later in the event when most of the loosies are busted out.
