Steps to improve online play, spartan51, 12. Sep 2003 07:03

Hi all.

Since the first of the year I have made slow but steady progress playing online. Started playing .50/1.00 and gradually built my bankroll up to where I am now comfortably playing 3 tables of $3/$6 atr the same time. I think all of the following purchases would improve my win rate and wonder what you all thought:

1. High speed satelite internet connection - DSL or cable is not available in my area.

2. Poker Tracker software.

3. 21 inch monitor so I can view all 3 tables on my screen at the same time.

Be curious if any of you have experienced in upswing in win rate with the purchase of any or all of these items.

Thanks.

My comment on this is that satelite is not the best for live games - problem is that you don't have a real continious connection - you end up having bursts of speed - but since I have never actually had it I can't say it would not be an improvement over what you already have.

I agree with Kurt that a satelite connection Your ping time is not good with a satelite connection, I think 200-300 ms is common. And how much data is getting transferred for a poker game? Not much.

Broad band for poker is overkill. You need a reliable connection. If you are getting disconnected it could be because your phone lines have noise. Maybe your ISP has problems.

Shop around for ISP. Instead of local get an national ISP. I had Earthlink for years and had excellent results with them.

Spartan,

It looks like your ideas are right on. I do have one suggestion. Instead of getting a larger monitor I have two monitors. Obviously you would have to get a different video card as well as an adiitional monitor but this way you are constently viewing what is going on at the tables, no switching back and forth. This way I don't miss the action when I am not in a hand. If you need help I can explain the setup in more detail. Think about it.

Brett,
Can you explain this in more detail. This is the main reason I usually stick to one table. I feel I give up too much with mistakes caused by one table popping up when I was about to act on the other table. I also feel I give up too much by not watching all the action.

If you don't mind please expain the complexities of setting up two monitors. (I'm computer illiterate. LOL)

Thanks
Will

Hey Spartan, no wonder I havent seen you at my .50/1. table lately. You are now up there in the big money :-)

I live in the sticks of Indiana and for a long time had only one dialup ISP available. It was lousy. Finally, a competitor came along offering dialup and wireless T1 service. Don't know if that, specifically, is making me money, but it has cut down on the frustration of disconnections and slow surfing. You probably know that some satellites bundle TV programming and internet service. To me the extra cost of high-speed service is well worth the price.

Poker Tracker is a great tool for tracking your own stats as well as those of your competitors. It allowed me to see my mistakes and increased my win rate. It also is most helpful in keeping track of your competitors, their strengths, weaknesses, etc.

I have a 19" monitor that can handle two tables at the same time. I think it would handle 3 ok as well, but have never tried it. They overlap each other somewhat, but work very well.

I purchased a Logitech cordless mouse this week. It is great! I dont trip over the wires anymore. It also has a scroll wheel between the buttons that makes it easier to scroll. Instead of scrolling from the lower right and then having to go to upper left to hit the back button. It is the little things in life......lol

I think the investment in a 21" monitor is worthwhile also because a larger screen allows me to set in my big recliner while using my pc. Only the younger people can set in the straight-back chairs at a regular computer desk. It is hard on my back. I indulge myself with my winnings. Might as well be comfortable as possible in my declining years :-)

I am not a computer geek, but I am a comfort addict that enjoys my pc.
Hope this has helped.
