Straight/Flush?, glenn, 12. Sep 2003 04:39

Being new to Hold'em but playing compuer simulations, I'm always tempted to play linked suited cards, say 8D 7D, even from early position. Since I know they're generally losers, I throw them away. My question is - what are the odds of getting a straight or better by the river from these pocket cards? I'm no dummy in math, but I seem unable to figure out what my straight odds would be, what my flush odds would be, or what a full would be and then combine them. Can anyone help?

well i'm no expert in this and i'm sure some other people could help more but I do know if you flop an open ended straight draw you have a 31.5% chance of hitting your straight with 2 cards to come, if you flop 4 to a flush on the flop you have a 35% chance of hitting your flush by the river. i don't know how'd you calculate your odds without knowing the flop, that seems pretty complicated......

Well, we really can't determine the odds of making a hand by the
river, as some of the times, you will already be out, having only
hit one part of your straight or flush on the flop.

What I can tell you, is your (approximate) chances of hitting a suitable
flop.

Straight on flop, about 1.33 % Flush on flop, a little less than 1%
full house on flop, ABOUT .5%
Trips on flop (either, or) ABOUT 2.6%
Quads on flop: .02 percent
two pair on flop 2 percent
Straight DRAW on flop ABOUT 10%
Flush DRAW on flop ABOUT 10.6 %

All told, you have about a little better than aone in four chance of hitting a suitable FLOP

P.S. unless there is some sort of BONUS for straight flushes,
Don't even THINK about them. That will just cause you to
play too many of these low-strength hands.

Up here in ALASKA, we have bonuses for straight flushes, as
much a $900!!!!!

So, sometimes I will throw in a nickel with one of these hands,
even though it STILL is not worth it !!!!!

That's great guys - thanks! Though I'm always tempted with suited connectors, I throw these away unless I'm late position (like, the button) and no one's raised or likely to. And then every once in a while, in order to throw the opponents off my scent (i.e. play a little looser than I normally do).
