Aruba Rebuy Tourney Question. To Rebuy or Not?, mroban, 11. Sep 2003 20:14
View ( Message | Thread )       Return to Thread List
Just noticed that the last 3 Aruba Supers are all Rebuy tourneys. I finally won my way into a Super through an $11 Satellite. Question is, how many players actually pay a $100 Rebuy in these events?

If I was at T1500 at the end of the first hour and chose not to Add On for another $100, am I at a serious disadvantage? How many players generally add on in these events? If so, should I resign myself to paying another $100 if I feel like I am in a good position.

For example, if short stacked with 180 players left (say I have T1200 and the average stack is T2200). If I add on, then I have paid another $100 and have an average stack and can play competetively. But if I didn't do it, I would wait for an opportunity to go allin perhaps or another hand where I could double up (perhaps I wouldn't make that play if I had paid the add on).

Im just not sure that its worth $100 at that point to add on.

Conversely, if I have a good stack, say T3200 putting me in the top 50 at the break, the addon has even less value.

I would really appreciate some thoughts here. I am not adverse to adding on if it makes sense to do it, but unless I had 2 Aruba chips it probably isn't worth it.

Perhaps I will play one $33 super to try and get an addon chip for 1/3 the price. Any logic there?

I am no expert, just my 2 cents.

I don't understand the whole rebuy idea. It seems like a waste of money to me. For $100, you can play in 9 aruba satelitte games and like you mentioned you could play the $32 event, 3 times.

If all these people are rebuying, where are their lost chips going? There have to be a few people that have huge stacks because of these rebuyers. I see no advantage of paying a rebuy, when the money could be used for additional tournaments, and you are only becoming average stacked.

My logic exactly...I have decided to play another Satellite first for $33. If I place top 3, I will either use it to rebuy or decide to play another Super this weekend. But I am not going to plunk down another $100 just to get to an average stack. If I already have built a stack, then there is no point anyway.

Btw, I am curious if players play too loose in the first hour. Seems a great way to play tight and pick up some nice pots (and also to get busted on some heartbreak hand from a guy intending to rebuy if he loses).

I think you are on to something here. From what I have read/understood about rebuys, is people play wild when they know they can rebuy. I would imagine that solid poker could be profitable when faced with wild play.

Are you mroban on UB? I'll look for you if I get to watch.

I'm not sure about the rebuy thing either. But I had looked at a finished Rebuy event several weeks ago. There seemed to be alot of rebuys. Seemed like there was 270 Rebuys and 140 Add-ons for a 400 player tourney. That just seemed astronomical to me. But the bright side of that is it means that many more tickets to Aruba. Because just like for every 60 entrants there is a trip, same for Rebuys and Add-ons. In a tournament like that they could easily be giving out 10 or more trips.

If I am up tonite I'll jump on and root for you.

Michael, there is another Aruba Super on Sunday at 2pm that is NOT a REBUY. If it makes any difference to you.

When is the cutoff date for going to this year's Aruba?

Sunday at 2PM is the cutoff. I would rather play tonight in the rebuy then cut into the Jets-Dolphins game (you see where my priorities lie, at least during football season).

As you said, the extra rebuys actually may increase my odds, so I will stick with that. I am not going to rebuy unless I win another satellite going in.

And yes TK, by all means come root for me (and heckle me if warranted).

The Dolphins cost me in a big money suicide pool. Should have known better, every year it's the same thing with their fans, visions of the Super Bowl and then they choke as usual. Houston . . . . . LOL!!!!!

Actually the last one on Sunday (11:00 PST, 2:00 EST) is a normal freeze-out tournament. I won an entry in a satellite last night and was afraid I was going to have to play a rebuy tournament as well. So if you can make it on Sunday, then you don't have to play in the rebuy.

If you do play a rebuy, I think you need to think of one rebuy and the add-on as a minimum to give yourself the best chance to win.

I would get the first rebuy as soon as I was below T1000, to put myself around T2000. Then keep playing your solid game, I wouldn't try to change it. If you get Aces or Kings, you might get a chance to double up, and having bought the first rebuy will be a big boost then.

Once the add-on is offered, I think you need to take it to give yourself the best chance to win. You could definately win without it, but if I'm going to drop that kind of money on the tournament I don't want to start out at a disadvantage.

The nice thing is for the 400 people who enter I bet there are 12 to 18 spots that give an aruba trip, instead of just 6.

Good luck no matter which one you play. If you play on sunday hopefully we'll meet at the final table! (It's my last shot, I've already tried two).

I wasn't going to play but decided to give it a shot and picked up an entry in a satelitte. I think I'm going to try to pick up one more entry and if I do, I'll try the a rebuy tourney. If not, then I'll do the no rebuy entry on Sunday and take 1 shot and be done with it.

I've won the aruba super twice now. Both during rebuy events. Both times I've re-bought exactly 0 times.

The first hour of play in the rebuys can really vary from tourney to tourney.. it really depends who is sitting at your table. I've been at tables where every other hand someone is ALL in to begin the tourney, but at some tourney's everyone plays tight and waits for big hands to catch someone pushing all in with nothing.

It really all depends on how you plan to play.. I've seen many people rebuy before the tourney even begins .. then use their 1000 chip advantage to push people around. That seems to work OK at times too.

Good LUCK.

Im definitely playing tonight guys, but thanks for the advice, really helpful.

I am going to play in one $33 Satellite first to try and get another entry for the addon.

If I get another one, I will add on but will not rebuy. I do like the idea though of using the rebuy quickly to get a chip lead and try to play the bully a bit. I play better when I get a few chips.

If I get another entry tonight I may also decide NOT to rebuy and take another shot on Sunday (Jets game notwithstanding).

Btw, I could have sworn that it says Rebuy on the Sunday event, but I will take your word for it.

Hope to see ALL of you guys in Aruba. Hope my dreams of sun and fun aren't shattered tonight.

I'm pretty sure that Friday and Saturday are rebuy events, and Sunday is not a rebuy event. I already signed up for Sunday either way. I figured it it's limited to 400 people, and it's the last super, then it might fill up well ahead of time and I didnt' want to get stuck with a useless tournament entry.
