Big Aruba Satellite Win, mroban, 11. Sep 2003 19:19

I know this isn't huge in the grand scheme of things but I just wanted to say that I just won my first Aruba Sit and Go. It was an $11 sitandgo and I will finally be playing for a trip to Aruba.

Recently I have won a bunch of NL sitandgo's at UB and I finally feel like my game is turning the corner.

I owe it all to you guys (okay and Cloutier/McEvoy too).

I just started playing NL 3 months ago and my game has progressed incredibly thanks to UPF.

See you guys in one of the last Supers. You rule.

thanks 4 Poker.

Funny thing is, I was contemplating spending $109 on an Aruba entry but figured I would give it one more try on the $11 table. Worked out nicely as I just saved a bundle. I probably have dropped over $100 on these Aruba sitandgos.

Does anyone know how many UPFers have won a trip to Aruba? Anyone?

Not that I am going to win, but if the cards run right...

So far 290 people have won entries. Unfortuneatley none have been me. I won my way into three Supers but havent been able to get into the final table. Best I've done was 27th worst was 135 (bad runner runner suckout on my all in Trip aces). Anyway, Sunday is the last day, good luck.

Michael, I finshed 12th earlier this week. Just missed Aruba by 6 places. Talk about heartbreak.

Good Luck!

What good advice did Cloutier and McEvoy give that helped you?
I haven't read their book

You should get Cloutier/McEvoy's tournament book. I credit that book and this forum along with Super System in my progress. I'm not nearly professional yet, but have won some local tourneys around the Bay Area.

Every aspect of NL and PL tournament play is covered by Cloutier/McEvoy.

I do still have to read Super/System, thats next.

But experience truthfully has been the best teacher. Will take a lifetime to learn it all (if ever).

The best advice I got was not to overplay hands like J-J, Q-Q, and A-K, especially early in the tournament.

Those have been some painful lessons for me Jav. I have been bounced out of a ton of tourneys by overplaying those hands, mostly when I hit my set on the flop!

With QQ, you make a pot sized raise preflop in mid position and get 2 callers. They obviously have something worth calling with. So say its KQsuited or ATs, something like that (I wouldn't call with those hands, but lots of players do in these tournaments).

Flop comes JQ5 with two suited cards. Player A bets into me, I raise big (perhaps put him allin if possible)and he calls. Flips over the KQ suited with a fourflush. Sure enough, the flush hits on the turn or river.

Happens all the time. Point is, I am not sure the caller isn't correct to call at that point. He isn't a big underdog and I am not really a big favorite. In the KQ situation (or KJ) he has an overcard with a fourflush giving him 12 outs 2x. Thats a coin flip.

I seem to lose those coinflips a lot.

Cloutier basically says to shut it down when you get called on the flop and don't risk all your chips with the flush possibility on board. Obviously without the flush possibility on board the QQ is much more of a favorite (and the bet on the flop wins the hand right there).

With JJ or QQ, I have been playing the hands pretty much the same way (although I have not been calling big raises preflop with JJ, maybe a baby raise to see if I connect on the flop). If overcards hit, I will shut it down completely. If I have position and the preflop caller bets into me on the flop with overcards, I just muck the hand.

Unless you have a great read on these players (which is hard to do online) that seems the only way to play those hands. Live to fight another hand.

AK is my nemesis. Can't seem to get it to work for me in tournaments. I pretty much play it like JJ and if it doesn't connect on the flop, just muck the hand.

Obviously these are gross generalizations, but the point is that Cloutier/McEvoy deals extensively with these types of situations and has been invaluabe in helping me understand how and when to get away from these hands. That book really teaches you how to avoid the most common mistakes made in NL poker (IMHO). It is a system that requires the utmost in patience and concentration but is very rewarding.

I have read that book about 5 times already and still keep learning new things each time I read back through it.

Congrats mroban!

I know from playing a couple that those 11+1s are not easy to win since they only give one seat and the blinds go up pretty quick. I won a seat in a super but it was from a 22+2. Alas, my internet connection kept going out during the Super, so no Aruba for me unless I can win on Sunday.

They are finally offering cable internet where I live, so I can end this dial-up nightmare. If you are playing the Super on Sunday night, I'll look for you at the final table (where I'll be hopefully).

Beigs, I am going on September 25. The super is that night. I am going to play a few Act II's to see if I can qualify. Want to join?

I got busted out fairly early after making my set on the flop and getting greedy. I had 88 and the flop came 892 rainbow. I made a small raise to keep my single opponent in the hand. He called just like I wanted him to --- and made his inside straight with a J. I put him on a QJ or KJ or AJ when he flat called my T350 raise.

The river was an Ace and I thought he might have hit two pair but was nervous about the call. I checked and he raised allin. Thinking that he had two pair and thought he "had me", I called.

He actually had QT and made the straight on the turn. Why didn't he put me allin there? Probably because I would have folded. He actually played the hand perfectly and I am not going to Aruba as a result.

A bit greedy but I think you have to accumulate a lot of chips in those Aruba tournaments. It was also a rebuy and I didn't want to rebuy. So my strategy was to try and double up early and then sit back. It almost worked (although he obviously would not have gone all in if he didn't make his hand and probably would not have called a bigger raise on the flop).

Sigh.

Thanks for asking Beigs. I am wearing my hat when we go to Foxwoods.

Dah...no can do, buddy. Unfortunately, I have a day job I have to attend to and September is always crazy month in the indie film industry (Sundance Deadline is the first week in October) so I'll be pulling in a lot of overtime.

Good luck. Let me know how it goes.

Beigs:

You are in the indie film industry??? We must know each other then...I am an exec at ContentFilm and have toiled in the indie film biz for years.

Maybe you want to join the next ContenFilm poker night. Game is soft as tissue and good biz networking. Nice mix of actors, execs and the like.

I would think we could do some business together. I have made 9 films in the last 2 years ("Secretary", soon to be released "The Cooler", and others).

I am sure I will find a day on the weekend to go to Foxwoods though.

We should definitely get togther. We can play the Kevin Bacon game connecting our film credits! (Looking at your company's website I can already find ways our paths have crossed.) And now you can tell your friends you won that hat off of some poor schmuck in the sound biz!

Keep in touch!

Congrats mroban! Buy suntan lotion ... in advance of your final. Put it beside your screen with a small card with "Patience with Aggression" written on it. These are just two ideas for you, completely ad hoc and offbeat. Good luck!
