| Ok I am sure this has been answered a million times so I apologize. Before this morning my no limit playing experience totaled 1/2 hour and I was lucky enough to win about $20. I sat down at my first $10 NLHE SNG and I placed 2nd. (I had T1500 and went all in with KQs with a low flop and 4 flush draw and I lost to pocket rockets). I was the chip leader for most of the game and at one time I had more than doubled the 2nd chip stack. My question is that I have no idea what I'm doing and I need advice on where to find solid advice on NL strategy? Right now I'm just playing on feel and my betting strategy is based on manipulating pot odd to make my opponent play incorrect or slightly correct when they are drawing close to dead. I know there is alot more than that to win long term at no limits. Any advice will be helpful....thanks | ||

| A couple pages down there is an excellent post on NL HE strategy. The post was entitled "Best NL Advice Ever". I placed in my first NL SnG as well, and I wasn't a very good NLHE player at the time (I would like to think I'm getting better!). It's good that you recognize there is still improvement to be made even though you've had good results. Good Luck! | ||

| In addition to the excellent advice I get on this website I have found Cloutier/McEvoy's book Championship Holdem to be invaluable. The combination of the two has made me a consistent winner in the UB and Party Poker sitandgos (not that those are much to brag about). But my game has improved in leaps in bounds not just in my winnings (very solid lately) but in my knowledge of the game and understanding about what I am doing (and equally or more important, getting a sense of what my opponents are doing). For example, I recently won an Aruba sitandgo largely because I picked up a big tell on one of my opponents. Whenever he had a piece of the flop, but not high pair with high kicker, he would make a weak minimum bet. Whenever he had a great hand, he made a bet that was 3 or 4 times the size of the blind. I had a hand where I was the button and had something like KQ. The flop came 783. we were 3 handed at the time and I had T3800 and he had T3600. He only bet T120. Hmmm. If he had bet the pot, I would have folded, but I called his weak bet and put him on a straight draw. Next card was a Jack and again I was prepared to fold. But again the weak T120 bet. River was a blank and he checked, I checked and we showed down. sure enough, there was the straight draw. Maybe I should have re-raised him, but the point is that I picked up a tell and was pretty sure I had the best hand. He did that again several hands later but this time I had the nuts. I let him lead, I called again. He bet again (drawing dead against a made hand) I called again. On the river he check, I raised huge and he called. He was left with very few chips and busted out a few hands later. This is the kind of hand I would not have played well a few months ago, but had the confidence to play now. As a result, I managed to win a winner take all sitandgo at UB (my first one). Anyway, keep reading and keep playing. | ||

| FIRST OF ALL, I WILL HAVE TO TELL YOU THAT NO LIMIT, UNLIKE OTHER FORMS OF POKER, CANNOT BE (COMPLETLY) TAUGHT. YOU HAVE TO BE BORN WITH CERTAIN ABILITIES TO MASTER THIS GAME. ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT ONLINE, OR 'REAL' NO LIMIT? THE DIFFERENCES ARE THE SAME AS NIGHT AND DAY. THIS IS SOMETHING THAT IS BEST TAUGHT, PERSON TO PERSON I WOULD SUGGEST THAT YOU FIND YOURSELF A QUALIFIED TEACHER, SOMEONE WHO REALLY KNOWS THE GAME, AND IS ALSO GOOD AT TEACHING. I AM ONE OF THE BEST CANDIDATES IN THE WORLD FOR THIS, BUT, AS I DON'T WANT THIS TO BE MISCONSTRUED AS AN ADVERTISMENT, OR DELEATED FOR "OVERLY COMMERCIAL" CANNOT INCLUDE EMAIL. IF YOU WANT TO DISCUSS THE MATTER, LOOK FOR "NIGHTOWL OO7, ON THE $200 BUY IN SINGLE TABLE TOURNAMENTS, ON PARTY POKER. OR, FIND SOMEONE ELSE QUALIFIED. THE NO LIMIT SECTION OF THE FAMOUS 1977 DOYLE BRUNSON BOOK, IS STILL CONSIDERED TO BE VERY SOUND ADVICE, AND MOST FEEL, MAKES THE $50 BOOK PRICE WORTHWHILE. ALSO, THE BOOK CONTAINS SOME OF THE BEST HOLD EM ODDS CHARTS, EVER WRITTEN (BY MIKE CARO) MOST OF THE BOOK, OFFERS HOPELESSLY DATED MATERIAL THAT DOES NOT, AND WILL NOT EVER APPLY. BUT, THE NO LIMIT SEGMENT, WRITTEN BY DOYLE BRUNSON, AND THE ODDS CHARTS, WRITTEN BY MIKE CARO, MAKE THE BOOK WORTHWHILE. GOOD LUCK | ||
