Interesting trend..., MozMan, 10. Sep 2003 23:20

I've been playing a lot of NL online lately (SNGs, tourneys) and I've noticed a LOT of players willing to call all-in, risking all of their chips, on draws. I've had people call with four-flushes, OE str8s, even gutshots... it works for me, for the most part they are just handing over their chips, but I keep shaking my head, thinking "Why?"

Weird, huh?

Early in a cheapy SNG I was in early position and decided to limp in with Qs10s. The blind were something like 25 and 50 and a middle position raised it to 200, we all had around 900-1,200 in chips. A player on the button called, and I called as well. Flop comes Ks8s2d, middle position player goes all-in, button who had slightly more went all in as well, I had both by a small amount and decided to go all-in with my 4 flush. Both players had AKo for top pair top kicker, needless to say I got my spade on the river knocking both out and went on to take down 1st place in that particular SNG. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't.

It does work out sometimes. But it doesnt' work out enough to make it a good call in NL hold'em unless you're in a desperate situation. You might make a good case for betting all-in in that situation, but calling is rarely a good idea. Of course you might have the odds if the hand was bet large pre-flop, and you get two other people going all-in as well.

Moz, I have been busted out of every tournament and Sitandgo by a player calling allin with a draw and hitting it on the river.

I know the trend should be "handing over the money" but for some reason the odds have not skewed in my favor (yet).

Although, I did win a $20 sitandgo the other day when I got AcAs early in the game with the blinds low. Two limpers I am on the button and make a pot sized raise, both call.

Flop comes allblanks with two clubs. Both players check and I make another pot sized raise (which was fairly substantial). The first limper comes back over the top allin, 2nd limper calls and I call as well.

First limper had As6c (unbelievably) and the second limper had KcQc. The turn and river did not bring any clubs and I busted both of them out (and tripled up in the process).

But otherwise, its been pretty dismal getting called by these guys and getting busted out consistently.

I know it LJH. The worm has recently turned in my favor. I have only been playing No Limit for 3 or 4 months total, so my career is young.

Thanks for the encouragement. Tonight I just won my first Aruba sitandgo and will finally get to play in the Aruba Satellite. Hope my luck has changed just in time.

I have a theory on that. It has to do with the TV poker explosion. They see people do all sorts of weird stuff on TV and they lack the understanding that there is a difference between tournaments and ring games. The thing is, they don't often tell you how big the pot is, what the blinds are, how many tourney chips does the player have left, etc... Anyway, oftentimes a tournament player will make a decision based on the fact that they are going to be blinded out soon anyway, or they have so many chips that they are willing to play something marginal and gamble to bust someone out, or they have a read on someone, or are getting pot odds, and so forth. But when you see it on TV you often don't know enough information to see why the play is correct in that situation, so these players imitate the plays without knowing the correct circumstances in which to make that play.

Anyway, that's my theory.

NOT SO WEIRD, IF YOU UNDERSTAND THE TYPE OF PERSON
PLAYING THESE EVENTS.

TYPICAL PROFILE : PROFESSIONAL PERSON AGE 32, HIGH
INCOME, NEVER PLAYED BEFORE. SAW CHRIS MONEYMAKER
MAKE 2.5 MILL THINKS "I WANT THAT" HAS NO IDEA, NO CLUE

HAS AN INCOME WHERE $50 OR $100 IS INCONSIQUENTIAL.

LOVES TO BEAT EXPERT PLAYERS, DOES NOT CARE HOW
MUCH THEY LOSE, AND LONG AS THEY OCCASIONALLY GET
TO BEAT THE BETTER PLAYER.

SO FAR, THE RECORD RAG HAND THAT I'VE HAD SOMEONE
CALL ALL THEIR CHIPS BEFORE THE FLOP, AGAINST ME

IS AN 8 7 OFFSUIT ! ! !

THIS WON'T CONTINUE FOR LONG, BUT FOR AS LONG AS IT

DOES, IF, AND ONLY IF, YOU PLAY THESE EVENTS PROPERLY,

IT IS LIKE FINDING THE LOST DUTCHMAN MINE, OR THE POT

OF GOLD AT THE END OF THE RAINBOW
