marginal flops in tourney play, cellardoor_sf, 10. Sep 2003 14:40

When playing in a NL tourney, I like to play tight to start out, to get some respect for my later bets and because I don't want to have to go all-in early.

I like to play the hands that I am involved in very aggresively, though. But often I am faced with this kind of dilemma: an hour in, I am semi-short stacked, and find a playable hand from early position. Last night it happened to be AcJc. I bet before the flop and am raised by an aggressive player in late position with a medium chip stack, all others have folded.

The flop comes up Qd-Jd-5h. Now I must act--my question is, with a marginal flop, should I shoot a bullet to send a message that my hand is strong, or should I check to the hand which has raised me preflop? I think in NL tourneys I am allowing myself to be pushed around too much and am short stacked by the middle of the tourney. However, I also think that my bets get more respect than most of the other players at my table. So, should I bet these marginal flops hard to find out info about my opponents' hand and maybe even take the pot down right there, or check them?

I think the answer to this specific problem has everything to do with how well you know this opponent and how big his stack is. Frankly, I don't think that your hand is all that strong, so I don't think that you can bully your opponent out of this hand. You also have to ask yourself what he has that he would raise you with pre-flop that DOESN'T fit at all with that board. I can't think of many hands other than TT or AK. You may get him to lay down TT, but if his stack is big enough, he may call with AK.

I realize that being pushed around is tough to deal with in a NL tourny. But, as long as you aren't so woefully short-stacked that you wonb't get any other chances, I think that you need to check this flop and see what he does. The best of all worlds, you get the free card and turn another Jack.
