Should you ever show cards in uncalled winning hand?, johnny, 10. Sep 2003 09:59

I'm thinking mainly about NL games/tournaments. Say you've been winning a lot of pots by betting hefty on 4th steet or the flop and haven't had to show your hands very much if at all. Would you ever show a strong hand so the people at the table know you're not always bluffing? That way your future bluffs will work? Or perhaps you show a bluff that won (if you don't bluff often) so that a strong hand will get a caller who might think you're bluffing?

Johnny.

It depends a lot on what kind of image you want to portray.

Helmuth likes to show his good hands so people will respect his bluffs.

Scotty Nguen (how do you spell this guys name) will show his bluffs to put people on tilt.

I think it depends on the game. If your raises are getting too much respect - show some garbage and then nail them when you get a strong hand. If your raises aren't getting enough respect - show strong hands so you can bluff more.

I personally don't like to show anything... keeps people guessing. I think the reason I don't show is that I love it when other people show me their hole cards.

I only do it if I'm worried about my table image. If I'm not getting enough action, I might show a bluff. I also might do it if I know a certain player goes on tilt if you bluff them out. I usually don't ever show the strong hands, because I want them left wondering what I had.

When I play online, you seem to get more people showing their bluff hands because they are so proud that they pulled it off. The problem is that some of those people do not play solid enough hands over the long run and when they try to bluff at a pot out of position with a hand they think is good (to them) they get run over by someone else at the table who has been biding their time waiting for a good hand.

I like to show nothing, I want them to have to wonder what I might have when in a pot with me. Two advantages of this IMHO, are that the opponent may think twice about a bluff on me, having seen only my winning hands. The other advantage is that when I throw out a big bet on them, they may respect my hands and play and fold a good hand to me.

I will sometimes, not very often though, show a great hand to my opponent(s) when I run them off of a hand to show then that I was not bullying them around, that I did have a hand to warranty a large raise. Other than that, I like to keep them guessing.

I almost never show cards I don't have to. Having said that, I will occasionally show a hand if I feel that an opponent has gotten a "read" on me just to confirm the read in that opponent's mind so I can blindside him later :-)

Only show with a plan in mind to use it to your advantage later on. Sklansky mentions in his tournament book that if you know your table won't be broken up for a while, you can show a bluff early to set up a player or players for a later play with a big hand.

Otherwise, make people pay to see your cards.

I think we've all struggled with this before.

Unfortunately, I believe it boils down to your particular place at the table, and in the group. What I mean is that I wouldn't show bluffs to a bunch of maniacs or loose players that finally folded, as they'd never fold again, but I might show a bluff to earn a bit of respect from certain players at a table.

I know my game, they don't. So anything I give them has to be for a reason. Find that reason and you'll have your answer to your own question.

The other day I was playing $4/$8 Hold Em at the Bicycle Club Casino in Bell Gardens when I got pocket 4s in the SB. There were four players, me, the BB, and a limper on the button. The flop came 4 2 2 rainbow. I checked the flop, so did the other two. The flop brought an 8, a second club - I checked again, so did the other two. The river brought a 9 of clubs, a third club, this time I bet $8 dollars and the other two folded - as the dealer pushed the chips to me I turned over my flopped full house and said "I was stealing."

I did this because I wanted players to think twice about making stupid position bets when I checked the flop. I think it helped because later on I made a few nice wins on straights and flushes from the blinds when I got free cards, usually when the flop contained a small pair.

REMEMBER, IT IS NO LONGER THE BICYCLE CLUB CASINO, BUT
THE BICYCLE CASINO.

FIRST OF ALL, WHY ARE YOU PLAYING AT THE BIKE? HERE IS A FAMOUS QUOTE: IF YOU WANT TO PLAY AT A CLUB WITH THE
TIGHTEST PLAYERS AND THE SMALLEST POTS, PLAY AT THE BIKE.

THE VERY FACT THAT THIS HAND WAS CHECKED AROUND, SHOULD TELL YOU A LOT. FOUR EIGHT HOLD EM, IS NORMALLY
ONE OF THE LOOSEST GAMES, SO YOUR MICRO POT, WOULD
HAVE BEEN MUCH MORE, AT ONE OF THE OTHER CLUBS.

NOW TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION, YES YOU MOST CERTAINLY
SHOULD SHOW, IN SOME GAMES, NOT IN OTHERS.

BUT, NOT FOR THE REASON THAT YOU HAVE STATED. THE BETTER
PLAYERS WILL NOT BE AFRAID THAT YOU HAVE SOME MIRACLE
MONSTER HAND, AND WILL STILL BET THEIR HANDS, IF THEY
THINK THEY ARE GOOD.

HERE IS MY ADVICE, AS THE SECOND BEST AUTHORITY IN THE
WORLD, (ONLY MIKE CARO KNOWS MORE THAN I, AND I'M NOT
SAYING THAT 'CAUSE THIS IS HIS SITE, HAVE SAID THAT FOR YEARS)

IN LIMIT HOLD EM, ONLY SHOW VERY GOOD HANDS, NO BLUFFS
OR DRAWS. THEN, LATER THIS CAN GIVE YOU CARTE BLANCHE,
TO STEAL POTS.

NOTE: THIS WILL ONLY OCCASIONALLY WORK, IN A GAME LIKE
FOUR EIGHT. IF YOU ARE REALLY SERIOUS ABOUT HOLD EM,
YOU NEED TO THINK IN TERMS OF TEN TWENTY, AND HIGHER.

HOWEVER, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF MAYBE THE COMMERCE,
TEN TWENTY IN THE LOS ANGELES AREA, WAS ELIMANATED IN
FAVOR OF NINE EIGHTEEN, SOME YEARS AGO.

THE TWO GAMES ARE AS DIFFERENT, AS PAIN IS TO PLEASURE!!

SO, THAT LEAVES YOU WITH FIFTEEN THIRTY, AND TWENTY FORTY,

ALSO, QUITE DIFFERENT.

NOW, IN POT LIMIT, AND NO LIMIT GAMES, AND OMAHA HIGH LOW,
YOU SHOULD BE SHOWING BLUFFS, AND DRAWS.

Hi johnny,

I think it's a good idea (and a good habit to get into) to never show your cards; this way, you don't accidentally show your hand for the wrong reasons of doing so. The less information you give; the better it will be for your own game....... and especially for a beginner.

I have definately formed a habit of never showing my cards, even if it is a straight flush or four of a kind. That way, if I were to show the best hands and not show others, people at the table might think that I was bluffing if I did not show. I believe Annie Duke said on the WSOP, sometimes you have to show to keep people on your side and not battling against you, for example the stack leader at the table.

I will show a lot of my good pre flop hands ( QQ.AK,KK and AA ) in a NL tournament if the bet is not called preflop as i believe this does let you to play more agressively. Yes some players may catch on to the fact that you only show a good hand and fold your bluffs but if this happens you can always ham it up a little by saying " i keep on getting these good hands and no-one wants to play " ( or whatever ) dont show straight away and then if you get a reaction as you are pretending to muck flash the good hand ! Remember as well in a NL tournament you will not be playing woth the same people all the time so if you show a big hand then steal 2 pots you migt well be at a differnet table by the time you try to steal again !

I believe image is very important in a NL tournament as the key to winning them is to steal small pots and you can only do this if people repsect your raises this is also why i sometimes fold to a small reraise preflop if i am ' caught with my fingers in the cookie jar ' as it prevents you to having to show a poor hand as a potential winner, The little bit of EV i lose by doing this is more then made up for by the pots i can steal after this. Of course when i do fold like this preflop i always give the comment " didnt like my JJ there " as much as anything it keeps me amused at the table !
Cheers CP
