How would you have played this???, Eman, 10. Sep 2003 08:42

Last Night on UB NLHE Max Buy in $25 .25/.50 blinds
Playing my usual Tight/Aggressive Play.
Get dealt JJ in the BB - 5 or 6 callers to me (dont remember)
I bet $3.00 thinking I dont want that many people playing against me.
MP calls and Button calls.
Flop comes: J, 8, A rainbow
I check MP bets $3, BB raises to $6
I call, turn is another 8, I go all in for around $35.
They both fold. Should I have checked / raised there? I feel I could have made more money on the hand.

I say check it and hope someone bets. If they bet just call. Whether they bet or not you are going to make a large bet on the river. Slowplaying is often wrong, as people sometimes catch miracle cards and you lose a pot that you should have won, but here it is unlikely that anyone will catch up as someone with three eights only has one out. You want someone with something like A8 suited to think he has a monster and make a bet that will commit him to the pot, then you come over top. However, the way things turned out, nobody had anything to call you with, so at least the check allows them an opportunity to bluff.

If someone is on top of you with an Aces full, you are just going to have to lose a bunch of chips whether you play it slow or fast.

Good luck!

I think you should have checked. Only two hands beat you, and only 4 have outs to beat you (Ax, KK, QQ, 8x) and they are 2 outers. Coming out betting on the turn after calling the flop indicates at least an 8, so you'll only get callers than can beat trip 8's (the only ones out there are AA and 8x). If you check you're likely to have hands such as AJ, AK bet again and then depending on the size you can either raise or call.

A free card has little chance to hurt you, so I think checking the turn is the correct play. I might even check the river if a blank hits in the hopes someone tries to buy the pot.

Yeah I agree. I played that wrong. I should have backed off and waited for them to bet. Thanks for the advise.

WITH $27 ALREADY IN THE POT, THERE WAS AN EXCELLENT
CHANCE OF ONE OF THEM HAVING A CALLABLE HAND, AND
WILLING TO PUT IN THE $35, ESPECIALLY IF THEY DID NOT
HAVE THAT MUCH LEFT.

BUT, I HAVE FOUND THAT THESE INTERNET PLAYERS, CAN
OFTEN BE 'MILKED' FOR ALL THERE CHIPS, BY BETTIN ABOUT
HALF OF WHAT THEY HAVE LEFT ON THE TURN, AND HALF
ON THE RIVER.
THEY ARE MUCH MORE INCLINED TO CALL, WHEN THEY DON'T
PERCEIVE THAT BY CALLING HALF, THEY ESSENTIALLY ARE
CALLING ALL.

THEY ALWAY THINK :" OH WELL, I STILL HAVE HALF LEFT"
AND THEN ON THE RIVER THEY THINK " OH , I'M IN THIS FAR.

SO, WITH A HAND THAT DOES NOT FEAR BEING OUTDRAWN
(EXCEPT FOR A MIRICLE ACE.

YOU CAN PLAY IT THIS WAY, HALF AND HALF.

BUT, THEN AGAIN, FROM WHAT I'VE SEEN IN THESE MICRO-GAMES

THEY WILL CALL WITH JUST ABOUT ANYTHING.

WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER FOR YOU TO HAVE POPPED IT
ANOTHER FOUR OR FIVE BUCKS ON THE FLOP.

AS LONG AS PEOPLE THINK THEY HAVE A LIVE DRAW, AND
HAVING ALREADY PUT SIX BUCKS IN, THIS REPRESENTED
YOUR BEST CHANCE TO GET MORE MONEY.

THEN, THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN MUCH MORE INCLINED TO
CALL ON THE TURN, AS THE POT WOULD HAVE BEEN

50$ BIGGER, AND THEY WOULD HAVE HAD MORE OF AN
INVESTMENT.
