I am going to run a poker game that will average about 9 or 10 people and wanted to buy clay suited poker chips for it. Where should I get the chips from, how many do you think I will need( I was thinking of getting 1000), how many of each color(and what color), and what weight do you guys suggest I purchase. Thanks for all your help.

11.5 gram
Ebay Ebay Ebay
Check their feedback and communicate any changes to their listing up front. You'll have 'em by the weekend if you want to pay for shipping.

If it's a limit game, you really only need 1 amount/color. If you ever want to throw a tourney, get at least 3 colors.
As far as how many, 1000 is quite a bit, but for 10 people........100 each of the same denomination is usually overkill, but will give everyone the feel of a real casino if you also buy the plastic chip racks to put them in.
What else?.....get a dealer button and missed big/small blind coins.

We have played several home tournaments over the past few months.

We play with 1000 in chips and kinda model it after the UB tournaments. Everyone starts with 10 Red $5 chips, 6 green $25, 3 black $100, and 1 orange (i like purple better) $500. This makes for a nice amount of chips to have in front of you. Blinds usually begin at 5/10 or 10/20.

It depends. (hee hee)

What exactly are you willing to spend? How long do you wish them to last? Do you care if they have weights inside? My advice would be to go to http://www.pokerchips.com/ and scour the entire site.
They have a great deal of information about the making of poker chips and explain the differences between products. They produce chips of excellent quality. Even if you chose not to buy there, you will be better informed for visiting the site. - Nathaniel Brous

I recently bought 500 11.5 gram, clay poker chips from a place called www.gamelandsports.com. I'm extremely picky, so I looked around for a long time before I bought. They had this new chip--instead of dice on it, it has A-J engraved in several places on each chip (much more appropriate for poker). I love them--they're the heaviest chip you can buy. They've got tons of colors, too. I went for all of the standards--white, yellow, red, green and black--but they've got pink, purple, orange, gray, and pretty much any color you can think of. For $195.00 I got 500 chips and a custom oak w/green felt case to carry them around in. The case also has five removable oak chip trays in it, so everyone can have their own. I guess you can probably tell that I'm happy with my purchase . . .

Ebay is the place. At any given time there are at least 20 auctions for 11.5 gram poker chips. Search ebay for "poker chips".

I bought a set of 500 "Dice" chips with a nice wooden case for $100. I think they go for around $130 nowdays.

Note these chips do not have the clay smell that you might be used to from a casino, but they are the right size and weight.

Most vendors let you choose how many colors you want and how many of each color you want.

That being said, I have since bought much nicer chips off Ebay. I have a set of about 710 Paul-Son "top hat and cane" chips.

The Paul-Son chips are many times nicer than any of the Dice/ Suited/ etc chips you see on Ebay. But you should expect to pay $300+ for a set of 500 and you have to be willing to pass up a few auctions where people bid too much. Also you have to be willing to wait, since the Paul-Son chips are getting a little rare on Ebay.

I would recommend gettting a lot of one color (say min 300) and then maybe 100 or so of a couple more colors (50 would be fine for the top denomination). My original set of 500 included 175 white and 125 red chips and 200 more split among three colors. That is fine for a fun night of poker - especially if you play a lot of sit'n'go type events. However, it really sucks for low limit play. You really should have a large stack of one color.

We run a poker game and stock 15 racks. Our player count is currently running around 30 players. We buy our chips at
http://www.5stardeal.com/ . We use the 8.5gm chips and stripe them ourselves. Works great. If you really need the 11.5 gm chips they sell them in different styles for .27 each. We've been quite happy.

I forgot to mention in the post about the 8.5 gm chips that I had some pics of them on our site. I don't know really how much you can tell by looking at the pics but it might help. See them at
www.amarillopoker.org . click on tournament results and pics. You can seem them there.
