Did I overplay this hand, Flatout_Mainiac, 9. Sep 2003 20:41 | ||

| LLHE party game....I have pocket rockets in UTG+2. I raise, UTG (solid), mp (call station), and late mp (solid) see the flop. Flop comes A-A-X, UTG checks, I bet, the table folds. I show my hand because I'm pretty proud of it and a solid player told me I overplayed the hand. My feeling was that as the preflop raiser no one else will lead this flop as the call station won't lead out and the other solids won't play it. Maybe I cost myself a bet by leading out the flop and not slowplaying.....what do you all think? | ||

| With a hand that big, there's nothing wrong with slowing up; but I doubt you would have gotten any more money out of anyone at the table even if you did. -Moz "That man is a Brownie-hound." | ||

| Yes you did. You have the deck crippled. If you have a wild and loose image there could be merit in betting the flop, but not much. It is a much better idea to feign weakness and hope someone takes a stab at the pot (just call on the flop or turn). You might even get lucky enough for someone to catch a finished hand so you can nail 'em on the river. Against certain opponents, I "might" play it differently, but for the most part, you will make more by not betting a monster flop like that. And...that's the goal right? - Nathaniel Brous | ||

| How low limit was the game? The games I play on Party you will have any person with another pair (either pocket or pairing the rag) or even a King calling down. If they've got nothing, they will fold whenever someone leads out. Those flops never win much money in low limit games. I don't think slowplaying would have helped a whole lot. on 9. | It was a 1-2 game. I agree that I should have waited until the river to bet even if there was a small glimmer of hope that someone would bet out. I would normally slowplay this hand but I think at the time I was tired and I just wanted to get the hand over with and finish up my session. Also, I felt there was just as much of a chance that the call station would call my bet as someone else leading out on the turn or river. I guess that is a perfect example that if you aren't mentally fresh at the table it can cost you in the bank. On the bright side, I played a little before work and within the first 10 hand I flopped an Aces over house and a 4 of a kind. I slow played them both and took down hugh pots in both of them. | ||

| I think that it wouldn't have hurt you to check until the river because the chances that someone would outdraw you (say with a steel wheel) are so slim that you might as well give someone a chance to bluff at the pot. Yes, you couldn't have won that much more money from this hand unless someone turned or rovered a full house. But, why not give them that chance too? I wouldn't use the verbiage "overplay" for what you did. What I would say is that you played the hand too aggressively earlier than you needed too. | ||

| Of course you overplayed the hand. At least wait until the bet is a big bet, and anyone leading will look like they are stealing. You'll probably only get 1 call anyway, so I'd wait until the river to see if anyone will bet it for me. Let them improve, and hopefully convince them you only had Kings, not Aces. Check-call all the way until it's to you on the river, then lead. on 9. Sep 2003 20:41 Flatout_Mainiac wrote: > LLHE party game....I have pocket rockets in UTG+2. | You have the deck crippled. I'm pretty aggressive and don't slow play much, but here you want to check and let someone catch a FH and think it's good. You might win more than one bet if someone bluffs, you flat call, then they pick up a FH with a K or something, on the turn and keep playing. | ||

| One more thing, yesterday I was in the blind with garbage (J4 or something), got stiffed in and the flop came TTT. Nobody bet the flop, so when the turn came I bluffed it and got called. Lucky for me the river came a J and I bet again and got called by someone with a small pair. Anyway, you can see that if you had the quads, you could make money of an aggro player like me by checking and letting me come after you with nothing! ;) | ||
