Table of outs, endif, 9. Sep 2003 14:06

Being new to this, what are the basic rules for calculating the number of outs? In that there are not always 9 outs for a 4 to a flush; or 8 outs for a straight draw.

Or even better. is there a table somewhere that lays it um out? I;ve seen ranges of numbers, but not the discussion of nailing down w/ some certainty the number in a given situation.

Malmouth and Slansky's "Hold-em for Advanced Players" has a table of outs and odds in the index.

Thanks. My question wasn't so much what the odds are for a particular number of outs (which is the chart I think you are referring to), but more how to count outs. E.g. in a chart in Sklansky's hold 'em book he shows the numbef of outs for two-pair is 4, although I;m not sure how that number is arrived at. And in books I have seen a range of count values for 4-to-a-flush -- as I understand it, with some combinations, depending what's on the board, some cards cannot or shd not be counted as outs. What are the general rules for counting outs?

Some of your outs are tainted - the card that gets you a flush might make someone else a FH - e.g. a better hand. Like you have four to a st8 and there is a 2 flush on the board. Say you need a 9 or a 5. Then you only have 6 outs and not 8 if some is drawing to a flush.

Outs refer to the number of cards that would complete your hand. You arrive at the number of outs by the number of cards that would complete your hand. Now you have to deduct the number of cards that would give an opponent a bigger hand than yours from your number of outs.

For instance, if you have an open ended str8 6-7-8-9 you would have 8 outs, the 4 tens and the 4 5s. However if there is 2 suited cards on the board then you really have 6 outs since the suited 10 or the suited 5 would give the flush draw a flush beating you.
