"The Defense Department regrets to inform you that your sons are dead because they were stupid."

That movie line kept going through my head as I busted out of a tournament last night.

Tourney was maxed out with 400 players on UB. It was a very very tight game. A lot of good players.

My game plan was to only play very good starting hands and only play them if the flop hit. For this reason I didn't do much playing and was behind in the game quite shortly. The crowd was very tight. Once the blinds got up to 100 there was alot of blind stealing going on. By the time they hit 200 I was able to get my stack up to 2000. But I was still behind. I told myself that I wasn't playing anything that I was willing to go all-in with, with the exception of stealing an occassional blind with marginal hands like QT. Either this crowd was tighter than I imagined or I was getting some resepct. Never got any action on my raises. Which didn't do much for building my stack. I kept on working it. By the time the blinds hit 400 I had 4000 in chips. Then I went on a cold streak. I was getting low. Finally I go all-in with KQo. I get called. I couldn't watch. I had to walk away from the computer.

I come back to the computer to see that I won with a pair of Queens. I check the hand history to see that I came from behind against AJo. I guess it is nice to get lucky sometimes. Kept playing tight. Had a little more comfort on being blinded out. Even folded 99 once and KTs another.

It is tight play for awhile again. Slowly creeping down. Seeing an occassional flop and folding. Then I do something that is so unlike me. I call a preflop minimum raise from the big blind with KT. Flop came Q8x. I checked. He bet. Know I know I should have laid this down right here but something made me call it. Turn comes another 8. I quickly go all-in. I don't know if I thought his last two raises were weak or what. My opponent thought about it a LONG time while my tummy did gymnastics. Finally he folds and I take down a decent pot. That put me on easy street to coast into the money. First 14 paid out.

With about 12 players left I had around 22k and was at least one of the bottom 3 stacks if not the bottom. Blinds were 1200/2400 and the table was down to 6 players meaning the blinds were coming around real fast. In the Big Blind I get AJo. The button makes a minimum raise and I call. Flop comes 998. <Here is where our Top Gun pilot comes into trouble.> I make a 5k bet at the pot to try and steal it. My opponent thinks a couple seconds and goes all-in. So now I am thinking that I am down to 10k on a shorthanded table with huge blinds. I also had my heart set on finishing top 6 in this thing. So, knowing that I am probably not even a coin-flip I call the all-in. Again I walk away from the computer. When I get back I see that pop up message that we all dread. And I was out of the tournament. My consolation prize was $240. But it was one of those 6 Aruba trips that I was after. Needless to say I was very upset. I played that hand so horribly. Why did I do it? I had played so disciplined up to that point. Heck. I could have folded all my hands and still made at least another $100-$200.

But I gotta be optimistic. It was a blast to play. And was the best 100UB Points that I ever spent (qualifying tournament).

It still hurts. I'm still brooding today. :(

Hey TK-

I watched you for while. You did well. Hey, you lasted a HELL of a lot longer than I did. :) I think I busted out around 130 or 140... not even close to the money, but better than over 200 others.

There's still a few days left to qualify; if not, I'll see you there next year.

Anybody know how well Javelin did?

Came in 42nd I think. I was doing great until the second break. I probably had 2X the average stack for quite a bit (I got really good hands the first couple hours), but once the blinds got higher my luck dried up and I had to fold for a long time. Eventually I tried to double up with AK and got busted by a pair of 10's.

Oh well, no regrets! Hopefully I'll get in one more before it's over!

Did you find the game as tight as me? After the first or second level of blinds, I don't think I saw a Turn or River for the first two hours. I either folded or was folded to.

Good luck in the next one!
