I'm new to the forum (that is posting). I've been reading this forum for about a month now. Just wanted to get an opinion or two, and this isn't to brag but to really find out where I stand. I've been playing hold'em for about 3 months I'd say and I placed 47th out of 867 on Saturday just missing a cruise by 30 spots. I'm the typical 'tight-aggressive' player. I played about 24% of flops and ended up losing most of my chips to a backdoor flush. I was just wondering how much of these tourneys are luck, and how much of it is skill. I know I have 9 more opportunities to make it the Finals. I just wonder how realistic of a goal making it to Finals is for myself. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

It's a combination of both. Skill will get you a long way, but you'll need that extra push of luck to get come out on top. In a tournament that large, the bad players will go in a hurry, even if they get lucky early. I played the PPM on Sunday and found out how valuable patience is. I was getting killed early, to the point where I was certain I would be out soon after the second break. But I stayed patient and got a short run of cards that allowed me to sit around and wait some more, until I got another run of cards, and lasted into the top 100 (out of 1000. Better than I thought.) But, I lost playing good cards, and got unlucky.

To make a long story short, if you're good you give yourself a chance. After that, a little luck sure does help!
