Alter Strategy when Short-Stacked?, Bart Mann, 8. Sep 2003 12:49

This is a NLHE tournament question. Let's say that as the hours wear on and the blinds continue to increase, you find yourself in the unfortunate position of being short-stacked--with maybe 2x the big blind worth of chips left in front of you. You're on the button, knowing you've only got about one more spin around the table before you have to head home. If you're not catching anything playable (pairs, suited connectors, big cards, etc.), what is your preferred play? Try to steal a few blinds when you sense others are weak, before the big blind hits you again? Wait for a playable hand? Lower your threshold of what you consider "playable?" I'm assuming it's instant death to wait until your big blind comes around again, because everyone at the table will assume you're weak (which you probably are).

Input is appreciated from those who have been there before--and maybe a few of you who have been there and managed to weather the storm.

Hi. I pick c) lower your idea of playable. In the spot you are in, pretty much any ace and almost any king is "playable". In a few more hands, any decent queen will have to do.

OTOH, it really helps to be the first one in. Try not to call with kings and queens if you can help it.

At the point if your going in your going all in. Any ace will be fine try to find yourself in position. You got to take a chance most likely you will lose anyhow so when you find a playable hand go for it. If no one has made the bet and its your turn and your on the button or close to it go all in with just about anything. Chances are you won't get a good hand again before your big blind. Obviously don't play any 2's or 3's, but any suited cards like 79 or 89. Any pairs. any ace. K7 or better.

Good luck.

Hi. Suited connectors like 98 are vastly overrated in this situation (and many others). The hand cannot win without improving, which is not what you want to go all in with. If you play 87s and you opponent has T6, you will lose the pot unless you hit. Better to have Q5.

Great point Barry. Something that I hadn't thought because in a full game, 98s is ranked higher than K2, but as you point out in this situation it isn't as strong.

Wait for a hand. If that means going out with a wimper as the BB swallows you whole, so be it. If you really only have 2X the BB, anyone with any kind of stack will likely call you. If you're short stack, but have, say 5X BB, then stealing is more palatable. And when you steal, go all-in. However, you really only want to steal against medium sized stacks. Small and huge stacks are too likely to call an all-in bet.

With about 2X the big blind you're not going to be able to effectively steal, you're going to get called. Sure you take the shot with anything remotely playable, assuming you are not close to the money. However you will often just not get anything to start with, or even a steal situation. There's no additional shame in getting blinded out of a tourney. You just got no late opportunities.

If you got just 2 or 3XBB i prefer something like 10 9 nosuit than some ace or king when in sb or bb. Thats because of position you have . and secondly because you will not propably get any hand better than Q 5 suited or 10 9 nons. in the next deal when you are helplessly out of position. when in late pos. and short stacked. take every slight chance you get.
