Omaha H/L Shortstack Strategy, verb2752, 8. Sep 2003 08:10

Hi All,

I was playing in an online Omaha H/L split tourney recently and made it down to the last 4 tables.... I had about $9,500 in chips, a little above average and took a tough loss on a hand that left me with about $4000 in chips just as they moved the blinds up to $1000-2000k. If I win that hand I am in good shape, but the loss really put me in a bind.....

With the blinds coming up, which would pretty much finish me off, I decided I needed to make a stand very soon and try and get lucky. I got the following hand (Ad-2d-9c-10h) and went for it, and of course a 2 hit the board and I was done.

My questions is.... Would you go with the low type of hand, or go with a high hand with stratight possibilities for the last stand all-in bet. I still had a few hands to see before my blinds were to come up, but I felt like the A-2 combo was worth the risk. Your thoughts? Thanks.

Hi,

You said you had 9.5K in chips, which was a little bit above the average stack, correct? The blinds were 1 and 2K, so I'm curious as to when you were all-in, and depending on the flop that you received and the # of opponents that were involved here would also be a factor as well. Explain further please!

Actually I had $4k in chips after a huge loss when I had $9.5k a few hands earlier. I had $4k left when raised a limp-in bet, went "all-in", the flop came 8-6-J, and a 2 hit the turn and I was done.....

Okay, that makes it much clearer, and if the blinds were 1 and 2K and I had only 4K left with my blinds almost here, I would probably have done the same. The 9 in your hand is raggedy, but you do hold the potential nuts for low, and your Ace was suited at least, and you did hold a 10 to draw to the nut high straight as well. Okay, it's not the "best of the best" holdings, but under these circumstances, I agree with your play. You didn't have much left, and you can't just count on that a higher type of holding will come your way, that will be better than the hand you were just dealt.

Yeah, I am also more comfortable coming in with lower type hands in Omaha H/L.... I need to start feeling more comfortable playing higher hands in H/L though, I tend to only play small hands. Thanks for the comments.

I would definitely have played this hand, given your chip status. I don't like being all in (or more or less committed) to a hand with only high possibilities; having the low to fall back on just adds so much value to the hand. Sure, you want to scoop, so hands that have good low possibilites but virtually nothing in the way of high (A229 for example) you may want to pass. However, with the hand you played, your ace is suited, you have A2, and although the 9T is hardly a dream omaha combination, it is connected and will occasionally make a hand. Considering your chip position relative to the blinds, this is likely to be the best hand you'll see, so take a shot with it (come in raising!). Having some kind of low possibility adds a lot of value to an all-in hand, so try to avoid playing one dimensional hands in these situations.
