low pp's late in tournaments, afro, 7. Sep 2003 22:32

I have been playing on-line since January of this year. After losing a lot of money, i am finally starting to feel comfortable with my style of play. The 1 area i am having trouble with is pp's lower than 9 late in tournaments.Example, i made the final table in a limit tourney. I had pp 5's , called a pre-flop raise. High cards came on the flop, i folded after the flop. The very next hand, i had pp 3's, no pre-flop raise, i folded before the flop. A 3 came on the flop. I ended up finishing 8th in the tournament. I was in late position both times. Was it just bad timing or is there something I could have done differently? And, should i play them the same in NL Pot-limit, and limit?

call low pocket pairs dont call raises. Pocket pairs make the most money and lose the least. I love pocket pairs but when i dont trip up I usually fold unless I know the other player has nothing basically when blank hit the board. Don't be afraid to call with pocket pairs but dont call raises cause this means you will have to catch to win most likely. All pocket pairs are 51% favorites to overcards. Atleast. So if blanks hit dont be afraid to bet them.

Hi. If you are short stacked, pocket pairs are your friend. Just go all in and pray.

With a medium stack, samll pairs are much more difficult. Calling raises is a very bad play since you are going to miss 7 times for every one you hit. In a cahs game this is not awful, but in a tournament these numbers make it suicide to call. If you are first in late, you can raise with them and hope to win the blinds, or flop a set, or win with a bet on the flop.

With a very large stack, you can afford to try to bully your way with them by reraising to get head-up and trying to play from there.

In general you will have a medium stack, and should avoid small pairs in most tournament settings.

You're going to hit 1/8th of the time with them... so assuming you double up every time you hit them, you could theoretically call a bet or raise of 1/8th of your stack.

If you won't get doubled up (I'd adjust my calling requirements based on the expected pot you'd drag assuming the players you're playing against, their stacks and tendencies, etc.
