| Howdy, Folks. I remember reading somewhere about basic bankroll guidelines for the different stakes levels (of Hold 'em), but I can't remember where. Does anyone know where this info can be found, and/or can anyone give guidance as to what is a "safe" bankroll for playing at the $3-6, $5-10, $10-20, and $20-40 limits respectively? Thanks! | ||

| Mason Malmuth wrote something on this in one of his Poker Essay books. From page 62 of Poker Essays I, for holdem: OK player Good player Great player $3/6 $1500 $1100 $1000 $10/20 $8000 $4900 $3900 $20/40 $39,600 $20,000 $11,200 Stud $1-5 $750 $600 $500 $10-20 $5,600 $3,200 $2500 $15/30 $15,500 $9,400 $5,600. Omaha/8 or better $3/6 $600 $300 $200 $10/20 $2,500 $1,500 $1,300 To me, some of these number seem low. | ||

| God Bless Mason, If my life depended on someone to figure out to a ten-thousandth on an inch, where the doctor must cut, to successfully remove a tumor from my skull, I'd want him to do the math. Unfortunatly, being a successful Author, has so distanced him from the harsh realities of making a living in poker, that he is WAY off base with those figures!!!! I believe what he was trying to say was how much you would need, to avoid going broke, in a situation where. YOU DON'T NEED TO PAY BILLS OFF YOUR WINNINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you have a job that pays all your bills, and just have poker for a SIDE business, then these figures are workable. But, if you are contemplating making your entire living from poker, then I would suggest three to four times those amounts, as a minimum, plus your rent/morgage paid six months in advance. Also, you should have something you can do for a while, if you get into a protracted losing streak. Dealing poker, is an ideal back-up, as the occupation is very forgiving of people who only work a short while, before quitting. Also, it is fairly easy to get a job when you need it, if you have the skills. I just checked back to your message, and LAUGHED at the numbers for Omaha!!!!! Are you sure this is what he said, I really don't think so. Anyone comtimplating making a living in ten twenty omaha, with only $1300, had better have the locations of the nearest homeless shelters handy, so they have a place to go when they bust out. Here is the ADAM THE EXPERT simple formula. First of all, you CAN"T make a living in three six, so we cross that off the list. The amount of rake you pay, is greater than the expected hourly rate, using the famous David/Mason tables. If you are very good, 10,000 dollars should be the minumum for ANY ten twenty games. But you should also have the following: Rent paid for six months. Car payment paid for six months Large stockpile of canned and frozen food. Part-time job of at least a couple hundred a week. This will give you tremendous power and confidence, knowing that you don't HAVE to win TODAY. When there is pressure to win to pay the bills, it makes it VERY hard to concentrate on making the correct decisions about your hand. P.S. If you are contemplating turning pro, I would suggest the Los Angeles area. Amoung other advantages, you get almost unlimited free food, when playing a 10-20 or higher game. This saves a lot of money, over the course of the month. | ||

| I agree. Mallmuth is definitely way off with those figures. The figures he suggests for Omaha 8 are fine.......if ,"YOU'RE ONLY PLANNING ON PLAYING TWO SESSIONS! ($1,300 bankroll for a $10-20 game.....HA)!....'You lose 2 sessions and you can be broke, regardless of your poker abilities, because everyone has losing sessions....even the best players. | ||

| I was thinking about doing exactly what you said Adam. Playing 10/20 in LA after I've established a fairly large bankroll and have a job as well. How do you get unlimited free food playing 10/20 and what are the best places to play in the LA area? | ||
