One of the universal suggestions that were made in response to the "When to get up" post was, don't play when you're tired. I made the same suggestion myself. Even though it's one of the first things one learns, most of us have played when tired at one point or another - and I'm probably one of the worst offenders. During a recent promotion at my local casino I played 600 hours in 6 weeks. I've played 24 hours or more at a time more times than I could count and have played as long as 6 days non-stop. On to the reason that I bring this up...

Anyone who has ever excelled at anything competitive knows about the zone. As I think back on times when I've found the zone during poker it has been frustratingly infrequent and always during the latter stages of a marathon session. I've postulated that it was during these times that I was so tired that my mind fell asleep and my brain just kept plugging away at what it knew it was supposed to do without all the noise, doubts, distractions, fears, interference and effort the mind throws into the mix. I realize that this is out there in left field a ways but was wondering what others experiences with poker and the zone have been.

While the longest I have ever played was 18 hours, I do tend to agree; the zone most often comes later in a session.

I'm not as young as I used to be, tho, and I generally find that after about 12 hours, I get so tired that I can't even focus on the game. I think this is probably a really personal thing: where I am in 12 hours, it may take someone else 36 hours to get to.

Angel,

"Wow".....6 days non-stop? I couldn't even conceive of anybody being able to stay up for that long. When I was younger I used to put in many marathon sessions as I wasn't able to play poker for more than once a week at a time; but the longest I ever sat a table was somewhere around the 36 hour mark and I thought that was long! I guess the ability to do something like that might depend on the individual; but I just don't see how someones brain could possibly function, not to mention, without just naturally shutting down. It's amazing though, it really is! Now a days, I don't think I could put in more than a 12 hour session without literally falling asleep at the table!

As far as really being in the zone when you play; I find that often I get in such a good zone that I can't even explain why that is. It usually occurs after I have been away from the game for awhile, and I feel that all my senses and abilities (?) are really sharp and in tune with everything when I play that next session of poker; which is probably due to not being in the same ol' rut everyday, day in and day out. That's why I feel it's important to have other interests; 'keeps you balanced:)

I actually play better wehn i'm tired. head to b&w after full day of work, get there around 10 or 11pm, then play all night. i start getting " in the zone" about 3am or so , and play til maybe 10 am or noon. I start raking the chips around 3 am, could it be because all of my customers are dead tired ? maybe ? I prefer to think of the first few hrs as my "warm up" period.
