Bringing Cash nto the US From Foreign Countries, Andy Byers, 6. Sep 2003 08:09

US laws require that if an individual returns to the US with more than $10,000 in cash, that money must be reported on the customs form. I wonder how large limit players handle this problem when they must return from overseas tournaments with many thousands in cash. I also wonder how I should handle a situation where I, on a rare occasion, win in a ship's casino and have more than the $10,000 in cash when I return from a cruise. Any comments/suggestions? First, we should all have such problems LOL :)

Second, the limit is generally 10K per person, so if you are traveling with a companion (or more than one), you can allocate the cash among them.

Third, the requirement is on cash only (I think), and I'm sure the casino would write you a cashier's check if you asked (you wouldn't want to carry around that kind of cash for security reasons, also)

Finally, if you're at an overseas destination, you should be able to find a branch of your bank, if it's a big multi-national.

If none of these things work for you, you should make the declaration. You'll pay a small duty, but nothing compared to the fines you'll face if caught at customs. Mostly, they'll ask you about where you got the cash. The limits are designed to thwart big-time drug-related money laundering--not to hassle people who hit a jackpot on vacation.
