| I decided on Thursday to try to qualify for the party million semis this weekend. I generally have had good success in the $10 SNG's as I can't remeber the last time I finished below 5th and I'm usually in the money. In the 4 times I have tried to qualify for the semis I have done no better that 5th. Granted I have had less than desirable run of cards but the common factor is that there have been a large percentage of maniacs in these games. In fact it feels like the only people still trying to qualify for the semis are me and a bunch of maniac. The problem is that the blinds go up so fast that you run out of time waiting out for solid cards and you can't do anything fancy with mediocre cards cause your gonna get called down by someone. Also if a maniac happens to trap me with good cards my stack gets crippled. Does anyone have any pointers on playing these type of sng's or are these just hopeless crap shoots? | ||

| I have qualified for the PPM twice now prob out of 5 tries in the past couple months. My strategy is to just sit and do nothing the first 2-3 rounds. Do not play a single hand unless it is a MONSTER! Once you hit the latter rounds, you HAVE to raise when you come in. Never limp in when you have a hand. This will either give you the blinds right there, or isolate one person. ALWAYS bet on the flop no matter what hits if you raise pre-flop. Most of the time, they will fold if they missed the flop or call if they have a draw or anything like that. Also, you have to steal blinds. You can not wait for the great hands all the time. Your goal is to make it to the levels where the blinds are really high. Those maniacs tend to not call with marginal hands because it is so expensive. So steal their blinds! Let me know if this helps! Mike | ||

| You are absolutely right. Tournament qualification tournaments are - in the beginning - like wading through a lake of squirrels that will bet all-in with absolutely anything. This goes for Partypoker (for their poker cruise) and bugsysclub (for their WSOP WarmUp), ... Probably for other promotions also. Granted, bugsysclub is by multitable tournaments (Partypoker is single tables) but that just means more squirrels. When I qualified for the semifinals last year at Partypoker, I rarely had difficulty, but I was also willing to let the maniacs kill each other off and played only premium hands. You just cannot bluff in these things at the lowest level, you will not only get called with nothing, but raised with nothing, ... so you might as well have a strong holding when you do it. In the beginning, the blinds are so low, you might as well invest some of your chips to "see what the flop brings", but fold if the raisers-from-hell start bidding up the pot with JTo. So what I am saying is "invest to speculate" in the beginning and then tighten up. Once the blinds start going up, play tight. If the cards come you will win, if they do not then they do not. A tighter attitude in the later part of the game might help. One advantage of maniacs in a single table qualifier ... If you fold and nine go allin, the tournament gets real simple, real fast. Hope this helps Flatout_Mainiac. flintsword | ||

| Thanks guys for the reply. It looks like I need to tighten up just a tad in the 2nd and 3rd rounds and raise a little bit more in the 4th rounds to steal and trap a little more effectively. I'll give it one more shot today....hopefully with greater success!!! | ||

| I gave it one more shot...I think it's not in the cards for me to play this weekend as I finished a disappointing 9th. But, actually your advice helped as it prevented a couple of leaks from before. This poor result was due to the following mistakes on my part: flopping the ignorant end of a straight (3-7) from the BB with an mp and lp in the flop and losing a raise war to the mp who had 98o. raising from the CO when it was folded to me with pocket 8's. SB called. flop came 10-6-X rainbow. I bet, sb called. An 8 came on the turn an I capped it. It turns out that he came in with 97s the turn 8 hit his gutshot and ended my play. Oh well...there is always November. Mike, thanks for the words of encouragement!!! | ||
