You probably can find the best explanation in the math book you just got.

Before you start using "Pot Odds", you have to get the idea. The basic idea is that you have "the odds of winning the hand" and "the odds you are getting from the money you are spinning into the pot". You compare them. If the odds of winning the hand are better than the odds you are getting from putting more money in the pot, ... you play. If the odds of winning the hand are worse than the odds you are getting from putting more money in the pot, ... you fold (most of the time).

example: You are playing Holdem. You are on the Button and you think you have a good hand (You have an open str8 draw and a flush draw). Everyone is in with no raises and there is $27 in the pot and it is your turn to decide to throw in another $3. Your Pot Odds are 1:9 ($3:$27). Your card odds are 15:47 or roughly 1:3.13. So you not only bet but seriously think of raising because your odds of winning are higher, you "want" more money in the pot if you have the best of it.

Just in case you do not know where the card odds of 15:47 came from, here is a short explanation. You have an open straight and flush draw. First the str8. "8" cards make your straight. Now the flush. You have two diamonds (for example) in your hand and there are two diamonds in the flop. 13 diamonds total - 2 diamonds in your hand - 2 diamonds in the flop - 2 diamonds you are already waiting for to make your str8 = "7" cards (diamonds) make your flush. 8+7=15.

Krieger in his Poker for Dummies explains pot odds well, as do most beginner books. Try to get the concept or idea first, then use it. By using it, I don't mean "use it in your games only", I mean really use it by applying it even in the games you are not in. Calculate your opponent's pot odds. I hope this has helped you FUTRPKRSTR and good luck/skill in your games!
