Venting and Whining About UB Tourneys, mroban, 4. Sep 2003 20:43

Once again I have my usual UB tournament experience. Start out getting almost no hands worth playing, play real tight, don't throw off alot of chips playing marginal hands. Essentially blinded down to T650 right before the first break.

Finally, a small raise from the UTG, all fold to me, I call on the button with Big Slick, the blinds fold. Flop comes K rag, rag (with 2 diamonds). UTG checks, I raise he comes back over the top all in. I pause and decide he doesn't have KK or AA and call. He flips over KJ. Turn is a rag. And the river is...yep, a Jack.

Busted out again on the river after making the right call.

I am about ready to give up completely playing in these tourneys on UB. This has been my experience in every tournament I have played in there.

Anyone have any cheese for my whine?

Just venting here guys. How can I know if I am improving if I get knocked out in these situations endlessly. That was the first good hand I had in an hour. Unreal.

Hi there,

You WANT guys like that in your game, although it sux when you are on a bad streak and they keep getting there. However, streaks end, and eventually those are the guys that line your pockets.

For example, last night I was playing Pot Limit Omaha, and I flopped the nut flush. I bet the pot everytime it came to me, and this guy kept calling me. I had to put him on a set of some sort, trying to fill up. Anyway, no matter how big the pot was or what his odds were, he wasn't going to fold. In fact he even called me on the river, not believing I had the nuts. Anyway, the point of this is that he was a terrible player, but me emptying out all of my chips to charge him to draw will be a horrible beat 1 of 3 times when he gets lucky and makes it. He might even get a streak where he breaks me several times when I start with the nuts. However, in the long run people who are always paying for the drawout are going to be the ones who make you money.

Good luck and don't get discouraged! Fishy play is good for you, but it increases the swings.

I've lost my last 10 sit and goes to stuff like that. Every single one to stuff like that. I have 99 and the flop is 257r, a player goes all-in and I call him, he shows K2o and gets a king on the river. Sets have been cracked by runner runner flushes and gutshot straights. It doesn't seem possible that someone would play the hands that are winning these pots.

I would say that if believe you are better than a lot of the players then you can and have to open up a little on your starting hand requirements. If you can see a few cheap flops then do it epecialy in No Limit against lesser experienced players as your implied odds rocket in this sort of game ( basicaly because people will pay off your hands but you will not commit too many chips to them ).

I have played quite a few of these sit and gos and whilst i am not advocating loose play i would say that you do need to " get involved " in the action as i dont believe you can just play ' solid poker ' all game and expect to win as many as if you are willing to play a few hands.

Just some thoughts.

you are correct chasepoker. ive played a million sitngos and tournies on ub. my advice: adapt, read books, get better, dude is right, just becuase u play "tight" as u call it, doesnt mean u r any good. bad streaks happen but if your good it doesnt bother you.

MROBAN, YOU FINALLY GET BIG SLICK, AND ALL YOU DID WAS CALL? IT WAS YOUR CHANCE TO WIN SO YOU SHOULD HAVE GONE ALL IN. BESIDES, HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN PLAYING IN TOURNAMENTS. MAYBE YOU SHOULD SLOW DOWN AND LEARN THE GAME BY PLAYING RING ONLY, YOU HAVE MANY YEARS AHEAD SO LEARN THE GAME AND THE THEORY. LJH

Ouch, my ears hurt from being yelled at.

I often would go allin in that spot but for some reason felt the call was a better play.

In any event, LJH, I am just learning the game and do have many years ahead of me. I don't profess to be some kind of expert.

But nonetheless, I do feel I have the right to vent when things aren't going my way. I have learned how to play decent tournament hold em and have worked really hard at it the last year.
