Baby flush question, MozMan, 4. Sep 2003 18:23

Ok, I had a situation in a NLHE SNG last night that doesn't happen often, and I'm not sure if I handled it well; so any thoughts are appreciated:

I'm dealt 8h3h in the BB, and prepared to fold to a raise. Amazingly, there are only two limpers, no raisers and I check for a free flop, which I am prepared to check-fold.

Flop comes 3 hearts and I have flopped a baby flush. Now I'm UTG, and not sure exaclty how to proceed. I'm the short stack at the table, but not in immediate danger of blinding out.

Here's what I did:

Thinking it was unlikely either of the other players had flopped a flush, but unwilling to risk all of my chips with no information, I placed a pot-sized bet (about 1/3 of my chips). The first player folded, then the second took a really, really long time... but called. The turn came a black J, and I figured he was on a draw at best, so I pushed all-in on the strength of my flush. He called immediately and turned over JhQs for top pair and the four-flush. Of course, the river was another heart and I was busted out.

My question is this: was this hand really worth playing? Was my pot-sized bet to feel out the others a good play? Would it have been better to gamble more and push all-in on the flop? Any thoughts appreciated.

Moz can you remember the blind size in relation to your to your stack ?if the pot is big enough to warrant it i might have gone AI on the flop to protect my hand.

Don't remember exactly, but I think the blinds were around 30/60 and I probably had about 800 or so...

An 8-high flush is very vulnerable of course and I'd be willing to win it right there on the flop. Part of the determination for the correct action is going to be on who your opponents are and your take on them. Although I play NL about 4x a week, I am not a tourney player so strategic adjustments I am unaware of may be in order in a tournament. That said, I'd very likely (in the absence of strong player specific reasons to the contrary) go all-in on the flop.

I don't want to give them the right price to call - nor do I want to sell the call to them. Anything they are drawing to beats me - so my feeling is to get this over with now. If they do call, well they certainly paid a premium price to get there.

When making a decision like the one you describe, I always ask myself, "Would I call an all-in bet with my hand?". If you would call an all-in bet, then you might as well make it. If they have the flush or call and outdraw you, you were going to lose anyway. Give them a chance to fold. You might even get a player with the 9h7h to fold his hand.

With only two opponents, the chance that someone flopped a flush with you is pretty small. I think if I'm a short stack, I push all-in to charge the likely four-flush to a higher flush to outdraw me. Your pot sized bet does have it's merits, however, in that you are less likely to get broke to a bigger flush.

I consider myself happy if someone calls since I'm likely best, and equally happy if they both fold and I add a little bit to my small stack.

I like the way you played the hand. Making the pot sized bet on the flop gives you a good chance to win it right then, and also leaves you the ability to get away from the hand if a heart comes on the turn and the betting leads you to believe that another player picked up a higher flush. Unfortunately it doesn't protect as much against the flush card coming on the river.
