Playing against superior opponents, osucbj04, 4. Sep 2003 14:10

I've found myself sometimes at tables where one or two opponents are really good and I'm trying to figure out the best way to counteract a good opponent. For instance, I played in a 2 table tourny on pokerstars (18 people) and there were two at my table that were really doing well and I was left guessing way too often. I felt proud when I made a nice move but that didn't happen as often as I would have liked. I did ok but I folded a lot of hands they were in. I finished 5th (4 get money) because one of them took me for two big pots out of my last 4 hands.

Thanks for your help.

Osucbj04 it is good that you are watching your opponents to see what they are capable of. This will allow you to play more properly when you get involved in a hand with them. That being said, don't be afraid to play your game. Often an opponent can look good because things are going his way and he is showing down a lot of winners. Just try to make good decisions when you are involved in a pot and don't let your opponents push you around without a fight. If they are going to beat you make them do it.Take pride in your own ability.... don't lay down and die. Just a thought. GRANT PITTMAN.

I have not played online much, but my question is:

When poker is a game of knowing your opponent, and watching their body language, how does that translate in an online game?

Thanks,
John

While an expert player can pick up important profitable information from people in a live game, that doesn't mean that there's not profit to be made without that information.

There are tells on the internet as well, though there aren't as many of them. There are also other advantages, such as a lower rake and not having to tip the dealers. What profit a player might get from body language in a B&M, might be made up for by not having to tip the dealers online.

My point is that you do have to play slightly different online because of a lack of some information, but there is still plenty of profit to be made. Especially with all the new players lately.
