| Hello all...I've grown up playing family poker games. I'm looking to learn more about the game, specifically hold'em. I've been looking to buy 'The theory of poker' and/or 'Super System"...which should I get? Thanks! | ||

| SuperSystem will explain holdem better but the Theory of Poker is necessary reading if you want to be successful at any form of poker. I would suggest you buy the latter (if you are only going to buy one book at first) and you can find the how to mechanics of playing holdem as well as quite a bit of excellent holdem specific strategy on the web. | ||

| If you want to learn how to play Hold em, then i would suggest two other books to start: "Winning Low Limit Hold'Em" by Lee Jones, and "Hold em Poker" by David Sklansky. Theory of poker and Super System are good bookd no doubt, but I think they are more for the advanced player. If you get one or both of the two that I recommended and are thirsty for more, then I would move up to the two you mentioned, Theory first, and System second. | ||

| I agree. The first poker book I ever bought was "Winning Low-Limit Holdem" by Lee Jones, and I've read it more times than the takeout menu at the Chinese place down the street. I also thought "Poker Essays" by Mason Malmuth was entertaining--but not nearly as educational. More for fun, I guess. Borrow it from someone. The Super System is a must-have, but not this early in the game. Until you start playing tournaments on a regular basis and are ready to shake the low-limit table, Doyle's advice might be too much information. | ||

| I am in your shoes. I bought Super System as my first book. It has multiple poker games; Omaha, 7-stud and of course Hold'em (plus others). I think it is a great book to start with regardless of your experience. I mainly play with friends and am looking forward to getting some first hand tournament experience in small buy-in games at Foxwoods. Super Sys. is mainly about which hands to hold and when. How to bet (always and often) and some good lessons about how to get someone to move in on you. I enjoyed it thouroughly. My only complaint about Brunson's book was that there was not enough information (re. NL). With any of these books you will be reading them more than once. I am going to get Sklansky's book next and then follow the other's advice and get some other books. If you have a good working knowledge of hold'em I would bet that Super System will be an okay one to start with. John Always... wait, no, no, no... Never hold 9,8 offsuit | ||

| JOHN GAMBLE, AS I SAID EARLIER TODAY, THE IMPORTANT BOOK FOR ALL, WHO WANT TO UNDERSTAND POKER, IS THE THEORY OF POKER BY DAVID SKLANSKY. LJH | ||
