How did I get so timid?, davideasg, 4. Sep 2003 12:16

I've been playing for about a month now, and was going real good up until about a week ago (old story I'm sure). I caught a few bad beats, folded some hands that wound up winners, and now I don't know whether to grab my ass or shake hands. When someone bets into me, I almost always make them for the nuts or top pair, or something that will beat me. How can I shake myself of this non-aggresive style of play?

You asked how to shake yourself of this non-aggressive play; it's simple - be aggressive.

The next 5 times someone bets into you or raises you - raise or re-raise them back. This isn't a sound strategic move but it's not strategy that you're having problems with - it's fear. It is a sound strategy for fighting fear. This maneuver will cost you 5 bets - if they don't relinquish the pot. But forget the money - and if you can't forget the cost of 5 bets at the limit you're playing - move down for this exercise. (You likely will save the 5 bets over when your opponents become afraid to bet into you for the remainder of the session.)

You get to let fear paralyze you into something weak and passive - or fight.

Excellent answer. It's so simply, but I think you might be dead on. Thank you.

Next question. How do I get the dealer to deal me a few freaking group 1-3 hands?!!?!?

just venting, sorry :)

Angel-

Great advice. Nothing like raising to get you out of your shell. And, it is likely that he will win a few of those pots as well which will serve as positive reinforcement!
