Which is the better hand and why? Buddies of mine are arguing stats, and I figured I'd go to the pro's...

Thanks,
John

Based on PokerStove,......A8 offsuite has a 56% chance of beating the K9 suited

A9 is much better. It's better heads up because you often win with just A-high, much harder to win with K-high because people push their A's short-handed. It's also better multi-way, because you won't be losing to a higher flush when you hit your draw. You can also make more money on it if someone else has a lower flush because you have the nuts and aren't worried about higher flushes. The only thing K9 has going for it is that it can make a str8, but it usually won't be the nuts and the times that it is the nuts, you will only be using the K and will often split the pot with the A-10 str8.

oops, I replied before my morning coffee and misread which hands you were comparing. All of my analysis was based on A9s vs K9s which was way off what the question was. OK, time for more java. :)

It dosen't matter. The important question is can you play the hand that you have for profit in the situation that you are in when you get it? They are both better than 72o but that isn't a good reason to play them.

While neither of them is a great hand, A-8 is far better. I never play the K-9 unless it is 3 handed or heads up. Some players will say this is incorrect, but it is the kind of hand you can get in sticky situations with - and I don't like the sticky situations.

K9 suited gives you a chance for a straight or flush, it's a much better hand. Of all the possible outcomes for the 5 community cards, there are more that would help this hand over A8o.

According to Andy Bellum's "Poker Nation", K9 suited is the 25th most effective starting hand, and there is a 12.22% chance of getting a more effective hand. A8o doesn't even make the top 40. (A8 suited comes in at 22).

Hi John

A8 is a better hand heads-up...but in a ring game with many players....In a lot of situations K9 will win more money over time...Of course, you must be able to distinguish those situations.

Forgive my ignorance, but...

Heads up = one on one, correct? I have the K9 suited and you have the A8 off suit.

Thanks for the reply. I am quickly catching the hold'em bug and find my "real job" only gets in the way.

John

Yes, heads up = one on one. And despite my other reply, I agree with Roy that heads up A8 is better. However, if you are judging the earning potential of the hand without any other factors, then I still vote for K9s due to the extra ability to make nut hands with it.

I vote for K9 suited in a heartbeat. You can make a str8 and a flush with it (flush with oly 3 suited cards too). The A8 has little going for it.
