Call based on pot odds question, cantfoldem, 4. Sep 2003 01:48 | ||

| I am new at holdem so this is another math question that's probably already been answered, I just don't know where to look. Do you call based on pot odds or implied odds after the flop on a draw? What about the turn if you miss? Do you use the same implied odds ? Or do you re-figure everything, pot odds, and implied odds? PLEASE CORRECT ME IF I`M WRONG ON THIS Implied odds means bets I will win at showdown compared to the bets I call on the flop, turn, and river . Example: Call on the river puts me in the pot for a total of 3 big bets if everyone calls all the way there will be 24 big bets 24 divided by 3 =9 or 9:1 (loose game). Do you need to do some assuming here, like guessing who may fold or might raise, then adjust the implied odds? I really don't understand this at all. Any input or point me in a helpful direction please much appreciated. | ||

| My thoughts on this are that it is a dangerous way to play to "assume" that you will win a number of bets on other streets so you should make a marginal flop call. An example: You hold JTs in the BB and get a free play. One other player and the SB call the BB, so there are 3 small bets in the pot pre-flop. The flop comes Q75 with 1 of your suit. Everyone checks. The turn comes 3 of your suit, so now you have the 4 flush. The SB bets out. When it comes to you, your pot odds are 2.5 to 1 to call. With 4 to the flush, you are roughly a 4 to1 underdog to hit on the river. IMO, this is a CLEAR fold regardless of whether or not you think that if you call, the other player will call and you can extract at least 1 more bet for someone on the river if you hit (thus getting you the "implied" 4 to1). Also, th player behind you could raise and then what do you do? I generally need the correct odds to call on every street to keep drawing unless I have extra outs that I think are good if they hit (in the example above, say I held AKs instead of JT, so any A or K MAY win me the pot too). If I get corrrect odds to call the flop, then I re-evaluate on the turn as well. If the odds aren't there. I fold...it is that simple. There are excpetions to this rule of course, especially when I am heads up with a player and have position. But multi-way and out of position, I think playing mathematically correct poker at all times is the best way to go (at least in LL games). | ||

| on the river i use implied pot odds because i don't have to pay for any more cards. if i get my draw, i'll take as much as possible. if i don't i can get out easily so it's one bet to win what's in there plus what will be in there(assuming he doesn't lay down) | ||

| implied odds are simply bets you are counting on winning that aren't in the pot right now. in order for implied odds to mean anything you need to be hitting to the nuts (or close to it). a chance of making your draw and losing the hand reduces your odds considerably and could send you to -EV land in a hurry. (see "reverse implied odds" in theory of poker.) implied odds also go out the window if you are, for example, drawing to a flush and out of position. you might hit your flush on the turn and spring to life with a bet just to have everyone fold since they could clearly see the flush "get there". understanding implied odds is good. but don't take the idea too far and have it turn easy folds into calls. one more thing....24 divided by 3 is 8 :) | ||
