SO SICK AND TIRED..., so_cal1111, 4. Sep 2003 01:13

I know there's been a lot of talk here lately about loose games... but i am so sick and tired of loosing to guys on the river who are waiting for their card... and who "should've" mucked pre-flop.

I feel like I'm actually too tight to play with these idiots ( is that possible?), but I don't want to develop bad habits either because I want to be able to play with the "big boys" eventually... the type of players who are extremely discipline and who would, currently, empty my pockets in minutes.

My big problem: I'm not good enough to play with the "players" yet (unless they want to have sushi in their game), but I'm having a difficult time developing in these loose games. I guess I am in NO-MAN'S-LAND right now... Any suggetions from the players who have already gone through this learning process??? (unfortunatley, I have a feeling I know what you're going say)--
Much appreciated!

I feel that. I don't know if I'm able to play with the 'big boys' yet, but I stick to low stakes playmoney games myself.
Nevertheless, I do find opportunity to multiply the amount in my stack in those games.
I believe that should also be the case in your game. From the replies in a recent thread of mine I learned to keep my mind on how much money I'm making. And taking those bad beats, regardless of howmuch they can hurt.

Hey,

Why don't you try finding a game that is somewhere in the middle. Observe a game, find one that may be better suited for you perhaps, and see if it fits in better with your type of play. I know it sucks to play such a tight game, then get a really strong hand, only to see it get rivered. Maybe...you'll just want to adjust your game a little bit without giving into their bad habits, or find a game that you may have more control over your opponents (passive), where perhaps you can feel more comfortable and confident yourself. Just a thought. Maybe "live" games would suit you better as well because sometimes.....all the games on-line are too loose! But if you play in "So Cal"... (ifornia), good luck finding a game that *isn't* crazy!!!

Hang in there...........solid play gets the money over the long haul.

I believe that if you work at improving your game, as you begin to get the basic strategy down pat you will also find that your opponents, even the loosey goosey seemingly irrational ones, become easier to read. This will be simply because, as things like keeping track of the pot become easier, you will be able to devote more or your attention to your opponents and how they are playing.

Being good at poker isn't just a question of learning rules of thumb such as " when a player raises me on the turn she is not afraid of top pair". That type of thing is useful to be sure but it is not always true for all players, not at any limit.

The key is to try and understand your opponents. It isn't important how they should be playing. You need to concentrate on how they are playing and how you can use whatever you know about them to make better decisions yourself. Yes some players will constantly draw out on you. Some nights it will seem as if nothing but that is happening. Thats poker, you can't stop it. All you can do is to make it expensive for chasers when you truly do have the best of it. You are not trying to win every pot that you contest. You can't no matter how good you are. You are looking for good opportunities, where over the long run you expect to win more than you invest.

It's easy to get frustrated in games such as the one's you've described, particularly when playing one's best. Before one could pinpoint your problem or even if you have a problem, one would have to know how many hours you've played and experienced these results. In games such as the ones you are describing, larger swings can and should be expected. You may be doing everything right and just experiencing a tough time right now. If however, you are in the red and have played more than about 1000 hours, than it is very likely (to 2 standard deviations) that you are not a one big bet per hour winner. You are going to need a large enough sample of hours and their results to be able to accurately assess your ability.

To answer the direct question you asked, yes it is possible to play too tight. It is admirable that you don't want to develop any bad habits - keep in mind though, a good habit to develop is flexibility. If you are in a game where your opponents are routinely throwing 4 bets pre-flop with K9o or 45s, then you need to re-evaluate that KQs - whether those opponents are in a $4/8 game, a $40/80 game or a $400/800 game.

Good players lose sometimes. It can be hard to determine if it's your play or short term luck, your greatest tools to make that determination are honest self-appraisal and patience.

Good luck

Get caros major poker seminar and take notes on what he suggests to do with each type of player. I made a graphic of these principals and hung it on the wall over my computer where I play on line.

I still suck as a poker player but these reminders have helped me suck a little less.

Or you could take two aspirin and call me in the morning

They have crazies at every level. Loose as a goose lol. If you think the low linmit games are loose, watch the weekly 100/220 (Sunday) game@ pokerstars. As previously stated by others, just attempt to play good SOLID poker and you will get + results. The biggest problem I find in my game with these types of beats, is that I TILT( I'M GONNA SUX OUT ON THEM , AND SHOW THEM HOW IT FEELS).I've found that laughing it off (as best I can) helps. If I'm consistantly getting BAD beats, I just absorb the loss and come back later, the game never ends. Also remember that when your luck turns, those are the players that will make you the most money and you really do want in the game. Hope this helps, any responses from the PROs welcome
