Weekly Tourneys in Vegas, SeanCandy, 3. Sep 2003 08:20

I will be out in Vegas 9/4-9/8. I noticed there are several limit and no-limit $25 buy in tourneys at various casinos.

Would someone be so kind as to recommend the best places to play.

This would be my first time playing a tourney in a B & M cardroom.

Thanks for your help.

Sean,

The Mirage and The Orleans both spread tournaments that you may be interested in. (The ones at The Orleans might be a little cheaper though). You also may want to click on to www.pokerpages.com for daily tournament info, and to narrow your search even more, you can go to www.mirage.com, click onto "gaming", and then click "poker"; it will come up with a list of their tournament schedule and special events. You can do the same with The Orleans; www.orleanscasino.com. Cardplayer magazine also has a listing of the daily/weekly events under Las Vegas tournament schedule.

Some good places to play LLHE ring games, are The Mirage, The Orleans, The Stardust, and Mandalay Bay......just to name a few. But as far as table/game selection goes; The Mirage and The Orleans will have the most games spread on a daily basis.

Good luck.

I recommend the Orleans, low buy in, pretty good turnout, decent mix of players. It's a perfect "starter" tournament.

Here is a complete listing of daily tournaments in Las Vegas:

http://www.pokerpages.com/tournament/weeklyresults.php3?subval=las+vegas&subkey=CityName&x=12&y=5&CityName=las+vegas&index=10

Mandalay Bay has a 10:00 AM $25 tournament most days. There is another low limit tournament at noon at the Luxor daily, a short tram ride away. I like the Mandalay Bay poker room and the tournaments were fun.

Mirage has bigger tournaments most nights, Orleans has tournaments. Typically you will be able to find a low buyin tournament at 10:00 AM, 12:00 noon and 7PM daily.

One note: if you haven't played tournaments live before proceed with caution. If you do something irregular like bet out of turn or something don't count on getting a favorable floor decision when you are a tourist.

Good point- take the time to read the big list of tournament rules the poker room will have posted, some of the rules will be new to you.

PL Omaha Tourney - Wreckless Strategy or Just Bad Luck?, SendMoney, 3. Sep 2003 09:41

Last night I played a Pot Limit Omaha tourney at Poker Stars, $10 +$1 buy in, 179 entrants, paying to 18th place, $537 for 1st place, 10th-18th get $21.48.

I played pretty cautiously at first, never going in without a premium Omaha hand or Pocket Aces and the strategy payed off, with about 40-45 players left I became the chip leader with about 19k while second place only had about 12k and the average stack was only about 6k. At this point I was seriously tempted sit out, go out and grab a bite to eat, leave my computer running, and come back when I had made the money and slug it out from there.

Of course I didn't, what good is $21.48 when I want the $537 right? A series of bad plays and some bad luck took my stack from 19k to just over 10k which put me in about 9th place when the following hand came up, I am KKingdom, and I finished 37th and out of the money, the winner of the hand Poker-Rock finished 8th worth $46.54, transcript as follows:

Before the flop I knew I had the best hand and didn't want anyone without a big pocket pair to make a cheap set, so I raised it to the pot limit. It wasn't a great Pocket Aces Omaha hand, but it did have a small suited connector which isn't terrible. I honestly don't understand my opponents logic in calling my pot-sized raise with Pocket Queens, the Q10 suited spades part of the hand is helpful but the additional 3 of spades is essentially a useless card.

The flop came pure rags of 9 7 3 rainbow, at this point in time I knew I was in the lead with the Pocket Aces as well as middle pair, I also had slight backdoor chance for straights and flushes with my 67 suited clubs, so I made another pot sized raise for almost my entire remaining stack, at this point I'm basically SCREAMING "I HAVE POCKET ACES, IF YOU CAN'T BEAT THAT YOU SHOULD FOLD!" Nope not Poker-Rock, he that cannot be intimidated, he cannot be intimidated, he has Pocket Queens, bottom pair, and he also has runner runner straight and flush posibilities.

Well wouldn't you know the turn card is a miracle 3 giving him trip 3s, at this point I'm totally pot committed and pitch in my last 2k+, needless to say he's not going away with trips. The river does not bring me a 7 or A and I go out in flames.

The worst thing about this hand was the results. I don't think I made a bad decision at any point during the hand, and I think I was as aggressive as I needed to be. However I ponder the fact that I could limp in and hope to hit a monster that would be fairly well hidden, and if the flop doesn't clobber me that I could fold. I honestly don't understand how my opponent called my pre-flop or flop raise considering the hand he held, but that's poker.

I had built my chip lead in a previous hand with an AA hand holding up all-in on the flop vs. a KK hand, and I had also demolished another player when I held QQ vs his KK and he bet the minimum on the flop and turn and allowed me to catch a river Q to make a Queens full house and then called my all-in raise when there was no K on the board.

My point isn't to say "Bad Play, Bad Beat" here although I definitely feel that way, what I'm wondering is, given my tendencies of aggression nearing the money, would it be a better play to simply sit out and watch some Sportscenter until I make the money given my chip lead and the situation? I've heard Scotty Nguyen and Phil Hellmuth say that in some situations in a tournament, such as when you're somewhat medium stacked and near the money that you shouldn't even play pocket aces against someone that has you covered. My story in tournaments has been the same lately, near the money, I pick a fight with another big stack who has me covered, I usually get in with the best hand, and I usually get knocked out. I need a strategy for passive play near the money, should I be more inclined to limp in, check/call, check/fold? Ideas?
