Some questions on playing HE, Leroy, 3. Sep 2003 02:18 | ||

| Only recently have I decided to start playing poker. The only resources I have consulted till now are Poker for dummies and various internet resources. The main reason I have not yet acquired more classics is that I play mostly for fun and I love the game, and because I have a hard enough job as it implementing what I have learned so far. Apart from this introduction I find I have two major problems playing my game, apart from other obvious problems as a beginner. My first major problem is watching others beat eachother. Let me clarify. I find myself in games where I'm in a chiplead, or in second or whatever. And it often happens that I get a streak of foldhands (my play also tends more towards tight than aggressive) like low unsuited cards (62o). During that streak others (weaker players) get rich among themselves. Winning big stacks while I'm forced to watch them do so, cuz I have nothing to compete with. Pushing from first or second to fifth or lower. And I don't have the experience to judge these situations (that is: whether it's normal or because of me) How do others deal with this? The other thing i wanted to address is this: I find it harder to show skill in a Limit game than in a No Limit game. When playing in a limit game with a couple of loose canons(whom I always seem to find) I find it comes much more down to waiting for solid hands than in a no limit game. This because it's harder to outbet people. And there a usually a lot more people in play around the flop (I only have lowlimit experience btw) What I want to know is how you (preferably more experienced players) feel about this. I am curious to know how a pro or solid player handles the above describes situation, or whether he/she encounters it at all as for the second subject, I think I want to know whether it's me or just generally so | ||

| I think you mean that you tend to be tight rather than loose. if you are gonna play tight, you want to be aggressive. When you have a good hand, Bet! Get your chips in the pot. As far as limit play goes, play as above, and continue to bet it out after the flop if you believe you have the best hand. Also, you should clarify if you mean ring games or tournaments. By refering to your chip position, I am assuming you are talking about tournaments. Officially Licensed Dude | ||

| No tournaments. I have non in the vecinity and I don't like playing real money online. So home games and online games are what I have to show for experience. You are right, tight/aggressive rather than loose. It's just that i can't stand seeing someone else taking the chip lead, while I'm forced to do nothing seeing myself sink further and further down the ranks | ||

| In a ring game though, there really is no chip "lead". Just concentrate on what you have and how much you are winning. There are many pro's out there who make a great living and they never end the session having won the most at the table. It is their ability to consistently win the majority of the times that they sit down that separates them from the rest. I would bet that some of the guys you play against are the big winner one night and the big loser the other. Average that versus your two decent wins and you come out ahead. As to your point about limit poker...indeed, it is much more of a "cards" game than NL, especially at the tlower limits. You simply MUST have a decent hand to win a pot. So, you could argue that there is less skill in the game in terms of fance plays. However, to be a consistent ring game winner, you must develop significant discipline to keep folding those 62o hands time and time again. Keep reading and studying and playing. You seem to be on the right track. | ||

| Thank you for the kind reply. I had not realized the fact that being chip leader doesn't really matter unless you're in a tournament. The reason I felt like I had to be the chipleader at the table, is because the one with most chips can place most pressure (IMHO). But you are right, I played myself from a 1000 to 7000, so that should be ok. As someone starting out. Unfortunately I have little opportunity to test my skills life against better players here in Holland, since it really isn't alive here. It took me some time before I figured out that there is ONE casino in Amsterdam that offers $10-20 hold em tables. But that is too high stakes for me to start out at right now. So...I'm out of luck. Online games will have to hone my skill. Fortunately I play for love of the game, not to go pro. | ||

| It sounds like you have at least recognized some basic principals that will help you survive to low limits madness. Don't worry that you don't always have the right hand at the right moment to win that big pot. Don't concern yourself if an apparently "weak player" or loose player is on a rush, just take notes on his play and use it to your advantage when you have a hand you should correctly play. Actually, I love it when the bad players at the table go on a rush because I know part of their winnings will eventually come to me if I am patient and play my game. Good Luck!!! | ||
