10/20 at the Horseshoe, chris nelson, 3. Sep 2003 00:11

Normally I play 3/6-5/10 games but had a little extra money this weekend and wanted to take a shot at a bigger game. 10/20 seemed like a good limit because I've heard more pros play 15/30 & up. I watched the game for a while to see if I think I will perform well. I didn't want a really wild game and that wasn't what I was looking at. One thing that troubled me was one player w/ about $2000 in front of him. He's either very good or very lucky neither of which would be very good for me. Aside from the small no-limit games, the 10/20 game is the biggest game spread that night. The only open seat is taken. Seat 2. He's playing a lot of hands. Leading out at players without good hands and losing. The guy w/ $2000 leaves and I take a seat. Immediately I'm in the cutoff and post. I have Q4. 5 of us see the flop unraised. Flop is Q high. Everyone checks to me. I check. The button bets. I fold. Seat 2 catches an A on the turn and takes the pots. Next hand, I have AJ. I limp. 5 players see the flop which is J37.
All check to me. I bet and get 3 callers including Seat 2. Turn is 6. Seat 2 leads into me. I raise. I know I may be beat but he has led into people with underpairs, top pair weak kicker, etc. I want to shut out the other 2 players. It worked. They fold and he calls. The river is a nice looking A. I bet. He calls. He made 6's and 7's on the turn and I redrew on the river. Was my raise on the turn wrong?
I played this next hand poorly.
I have KdQd in the small blind. Early pos. raises. He gets one caller that doesn't need a good hand to play. I know the raiser has a good hand. I call but don't really like my call. Flop is K high. I check. I don't like that check. I feel I should have lead out into him. I call flop and turn. River makes running spades. I check. The raiser checks and the loose player bets. There goes my free showdown. I think I should have raised and might have taken the pot but I call and so does the raiser. He had AA. The loose player had K5.
Another hand, I get AA on the button. I raise and have 5 callers. Flop is J high with 2 clubs. Everybody checks to the UTG player who bets. I raise. An early position player calls 2 bets. The UTG player 3 bets. Now I wonder if he has 3 7's. I don't think he has 3 J's because he didn't raise but with the 2 flush he could have put me on AK and playing at me w/ a draw. I make it 4 bets. Early player and UTG calls. Turn is a club. Early player leads at us both. UTG calls and I call. I really hate my call. I folded to a bet on the river. Early player has 4c5c and the UTG wins with Qc6c.
I only played a little over an hour because my girlfriend was getting tired. I quit a winner but those two hands were the difference b/tw a $50 win and a win over $100.
Any comments will be appreciated.
Thank You, Chris

Looks to me like you held your own in the game. The only thing I disagree with is not leading the KQ hand from the SB. It may be raised by the pre-flop raiser, but you will surely lose the other guy and that will increase your chances of winning the pot if another K or Q comes. If he does raise it will also give you some information about his hand too and can help you to play the remaining streets more effectively.

Overall, I think you did well. One thing to remember though...if you are going to take a shot at the game, play confidently all the way through. The worst thing you can do is to take your shot and be really timid.

Good luck.

Steve
