2nd round big tourney advice needed, tommyhawk, 2. Sep 2003 15:28

Hi all,

We have this yearly tournament that is called the European pokerchampionship for casino employees. (the mikhon open ).
It is a 3 day event .First 2 days are rounds to qualify for the final day.
There are 5 sessions of 100 players each from whom 20 go on to final day.
So the final day is also 100 players and you play on with the chips you have from the qualifyingsession.

You start with 400 chips and can add on another 400 for a cheap price ( once ) which almost everybody does.

Ok ..it was a hard battle but I made it to the last 20 in my session and had 3,300 chips left.
This is I think a little less then average cause I think everybody used the revue (add on ).Chipleader had over 10,000.
I was in the first session which is a bit of a disadvantage cause others know what they need.

I really like some advice on how my play should be or what you think.
Should I loosen up and what cards would you start from in what position.
Or should I play tight and wait to get my chips in.

It is a limit tournament and I believe blinds will start at 150-300.

If you have some experience with this or any advice please write it down. Greatly appreciated.

Keep on learning.
Tommyhawk.

Tommyhawk;

Good luck in the finals. It looks like you're just slightly below average, but the blinds will be putting pressure on you to play. Currently you are putting $450 into the pot every round in blinds, so if you don't play a hand for a couple of rounds, you'll ante off a significant percentage of your stack.

My advice to you is to play selectively aggressive. Try to be the first one into the pot if you play, and enter the pot for a raise. In early position, I would play particularly tight, but you must be aggressive in later positions if its folded to you. This means hands like A5 suited should be folded up front, but I would raise with them if its folded to you and you're near the button. You can't afford to wait for aces and kings. If there is a raise in front of you, I would recommend you only play hands that you feel are probably the best hand (don't call raises with drawing hands like QJ suited). And, if you feel you have the best hand, reraise the original raiser. This accomplishes a couple of things: 1-it clears out the players behind you, giving you position, and it makes it tough on the blinds to call; 2- it lets you take the lead in the pot; if you and your opponent both miss the flop, you can often win the pot with one more bet.

Hope this is helpful. Get lucky!

Mark

Hi mr. Gregorich,

I actually play like this and did not hit a thing on the flop. They never seem to fold, maybe it will be better in the finals though.

Can i raise A5 against a large stack i fold KJ and stuff in early position but i am tempted to raise them while i am in need of some chips.
I know i won't cause while i read this i think...nah.

I kinda was waiting for someone to give me the secret formula...lol.

Tyvm for taking your time to give me some sound advice.

keep on learning,

Tommyhawk

Steals get to be a lot more effective in the later parts of the tournament. Just make sure you only do it with decent cards in good position.
