Limit HE multi table strategy, Dr_Monkey, 2. Sep 2003 07:43

I played in two limit hold'em multi table tournaments this weekend. I was 3 out of 125 in the first and 25 out of 193 in the second. I made a dumb mistake by raising to aggressively against an opponent who was on tilt. If I would have stuck to my game plan I think I would have done better than 25.

The first tournament only paid for the Top 5. You got a free entry into a $25 qualifier. It only cost $1 to play. I told myself that I was going to have to win if I wanted to qualify. Wasn't enough to just "get to the money" since only 5 places paid. I was going to play solid poker. Play with solid starting hands. Bet strong when I think I am ahead and fold when I miss the flop AND not chase the pot.

We started with 1000. The first few hands I played I won. I was feeling good. I took a few bad beats so I think. I think I played solid, but the same guy caught a card on the river to beat me twice. I was down to 600 at one point. I continued to play solid and turned it around. I stuck it to the guy who gave me the bad beats. I noticed he played any face card regardless of kicker. I out kicked him on a hand or two and had better cards than him to begin with on some hands.

For the most part, I would raise any pot that I was going to get into. My table rarely raised. I would raise from early to late almost every time I entered a hand. I am not sure how effective this should be. What kind of table image does this give me? I almost always raised with what I thought was a good hand. Ace with high kicker, King with high kicker. high pocket pair. If I was called, often the callers would fold on the flop or turn. Some would call to the river, and that I think helped me, because it showed that I was raising with strong hands. I adjusted my betting after the flop depending on if I hit or thought I was ahead.

One big reason for me raising to play was to make the SB and BB think about what they wanted to do. I HATE giving them a free look at the flop if I am going to get into the hand. Had 2 BB hit monster flops with I was holding pocket pairs. Had 88 on the button. I limped in. BB had 57s and flop was 3 5 5. If I would have raised I hope he wouldn't have called and I would have won pot because other limper folded when I bet the flop.

I think raising with small to middle pairs is real good in late position or on the button if you have 2-3 limpers.

Is it better to limp or raise with small to middle pairs in early to middle position? Hoping to scare marginal hands and Ax out of the pot?

Is this what is called tight agressive? I wasn't playing every hand. Actually I rarely played a hand. But when I did, I came out swinging. I got the sense that some players didn't want to tangle with me if I entered the hand.

Did I get lucky in these tournament or am I giving away too much by raising almost all my hands?

That's generally a good strategy in tournament play. After the first several rounds, I rarely enter a pot without raising. Since you can't play many drawing hands in tournament play, you generally want to play only solid hands. And these types of hands are usually worth a raise. Sometimes the table texture will allow you to limp in with small pocket pairs or suited connectors, but I wouldn't get too attached to them in tournament play. Especially after the blinds are significant.

you might be giving away too much on this post. I played with you ( fordo) and finished 44. Not as good as you, but now i have a line on your strategy

Great! My secret is out. But now I know that you know what I know...you know?

You going to try to qualify for other events? I am playing on Sunday in the $25 qualifier.

I hope your post is in jest. I know that it's possible than some of us UPF'ers will meet in actual play. But I link to think of this forum as a good place for everybody to freely discuss poker ideas and strategy. We definately don't want to foster an atmosphere where people are afraid to really say what they think is correct for fear of it being used against them. Then this forum wouldn't be very useful.

My post was in jest and I am sure Gary Ford's post was in jest. We had a good time playing especially once we found out we were both UPF'ers.
