| Yesterday I recieved a response (many responses actually - thanks) to my question about my play of 44 in the cutoff position (Essentially the button as the button was telegraphing a fold). I want to examine Roy's Cooke's response and would invite you all to help me - (Roy : love your further input here too). Roy said: "......I do NOT agree with the defining of hands in the manner > you described......Where if I have this hand, I do this play without defining the > texture of the situation that is current. " Certainly I agree. On the other hand, I mentioned that I had only been in the game for 30 minutes and was amidst many new faces. While 30 minutes is often enough time to gather sufficient information - this time it was not. My adherence to book principles is simply a template over which I lay the texture of the players, the game and circumstances. If however I lack an understanding of the texture - (because I just sat down or a couple of new players joined etc) then I rely on the only information that I have - which is textbook. Having said that, part of me thinks I would have been better off mucking the 44 until I had gained more of a feel for those players in the blinds - another part of me realizes that I am being watched too - and wants to set an aggressive image - even at the price of a single pot in which I am likely a small favorite. I should have mentioned that this was the first hand I found since I had sat down which was even marginal - so after 30 minutes I was beginning (imo) to create an unfavorable rock-ish image. Anyway, thanks to any who are willing to bat this around with me a bit more. Angel | ||

| Hi Angel If you are unfamiliar with the players I would tend to play tight on my marginal hands...... I do understand that this sets the stage for you being perceived tight.....That said, that can be to your advantage if you make plays which causes your opponents to fold when they should call. ...You can also change your image with a gear change at a point in time in which your are comfortable in the reading of your opponents. You should have some sort of feel fro your opponents after playing with them for 30 minutes! I do not think in terms of "I play this hand in this position" ......I adjust my hand selection and strategies based on the situation that is current! Life is good :-) Roy Cooke on 2.
