With 2 tables left, I am one of the larger stacks(~15K) in the small blind, average stack around 8K, 400/800 blinds with 100 ante the biggest stack (~25K) in CO (very aggressive player, but likes slowplaying/trapping with big pocket pairs) opens with a raise to 1600 (so 2600 in the pot), I re-raise to 3600 from the small blind with JJ, CO goes all in. I am certain the CO has AK or AQ (I have played with him quite a bit) - should I call as a small favorite or wait for a more favorable situation? Tourney pays top 5 places with 1st getting 40%.

Personally, I would fold the Jacks here because if you lose you gain nothing. Wait for him to try and trap you like that when you have KK or AA and then push all-in. I don't like coin flip hands this close to the money, especially when you are one of the larger stacks.

I know there are others who will disagree saying that this is a weak action playing "not to lose", but you are close enough to the moeny that I think it is the right play on the off chance that this time he is swqitching strategy and has QQ or better.

BTW, what did you do and how did it come out?

The problem I have with laying it down is that you're getting better than 50/50 odds on your money.
It's nearly 2 to 1 after a rough estimate.
I think both plays are valid, but I think it's harder even as a conservative player

Yes, you may be getting 50/50, but if you lose you forefeit your solid shot at a money position. The idea as I see it is to survive until then and then become more aggressive if you need to. Busting out with JJ close to the bubble (because you will get called since he is the CL) isn't worth it in EV terms to me.

The exact same situation happened to me the other day. 11 players left, only 7 get paid. I was averaged stacked and a larger stack who was loose aggressive raised 1/2 my stack. I have JJ in late position.

I ended up losing my entire stack on that hand and got busted out overplaying my JJ after playing a great tournament to that point. Looking back, at best i would be a slight favorite, at worst i am completely dominated and am looking at 2 outs.

The big problem with JJ is that you are never a big favorite unless you flop a set, equating the hand to 22. All of the hands your opponent would likely raise with are bettor or equal to JJ(with the exception of 10-10 and 9-9 for some players).

I've noticed lately that JJ and AJo, are hands that win small pots or lose big pots in tournaments. I've stopped raising with them in tournaments unless i'm opening in late position because they can't stand a reraise.

JJ should be folded agaisnt any show of strength (unless from a maniac) late in a tournament.

I think someone showed a list here of the most common bust hands a while ago, and JJ was near or at the top.

I think the problem occurs in this hand when you only raise him 2000 more ( if i read it correctly ) i think the best play here is to either flat call ( which is maybe a bit weak )or to stick him all in here ( which is what i would have done in the SB against a CO raiser).

Slansky writes a good chapter in TPFAP which he talks about not giving someone the opportunity to reraise you if you will have to fold a good hand ( which JJ is ). So i think the options here are a flat call or raise all in, i dont like the small raise option . By raising small you are in effect doing no diferent to calling as the CO is either going to call your bet and then you are in the same position on the flop as calling or he going to raise all in ( in which case you may have well reraised yourself if you call or you should have flat called if you are going to fold to his all in bet )

Again apologies for the poor English cant think straight today

You have one of the most troublesome hands in poker (the other being pocket tens) plus you are in the absolute worst position. There are only two ways to play pocket jacks--either throw them into the muck or raise all-in. Are you feeling lucky?
Personally, I would opt to muck the hand and wait for better opportunities. With one of the larger stacks, you stand to make the final 5 (money-paying) spots. Your jacks are favored over AK or AQ, but not by a lot. The big stack can afford to lose the hand--you can not. So, once again, do you feel lucky?
