Playing low pairs short stacked in a sitngo, Eihli, 1. Sep 2003 14:23

Unless a very tight player makes a raise before you, would you ever fold one of these?

A couple hands today have made me wonder. First hand I get dealt 55 in MP. The blinds are 75/150 and I have about 600 in chips. I go all-in and get called by KK. Flop is 58K.

Second hand happens in another tournament when the blinds are at 50/100 and I have about 700 in chips and I get dealt 66 in EP. I go all-in and get called by the SB who has QQ. Flop is 26Q.

In both of these we were down to 5 people left and I was the shortest stack. If I had just called the big blind to see the flop, I would have gone all-in with my set anyway, so the only thing calling preflop would have allowed me was to fold if I was raised, but would folding a low pair to a raise preflop when shortstacked with high blinds be a good play? Or, is it the time to flip a coin and double up or get out in time for the next table? Was I just unlucky on both of these?

One other unrelated hand that I'd like comments on is again, me shorstacked with high blinds. I go all-in with AKs and get called by the BB who has KTo. He catches a 10 and beats me. Did I do wrong?

I'm in quite a down streak now, and since I havn't been playing poker for very long it's hard for me to tell if it's because I'm playing poorly, or if it's just some standard bad luck. Not knowing if I'm playing poorly, even if I'm winning, is more frustrating than knowing I'm playing poorly and losing.

*sigh*

Just lost my 8th sitngo in a row.

I have 1400 and BB has 700 Blinds are 50/100 and this time I have 99 in EP. I raise to 200, fold to BB who calls, flop is 28Tr. BB goes all-in and I call. He shows K2o and catches a king on the turn. A few hands later I get dealt A9 in SB. I call for 75 and flop is A8Q. I go all in for my last 600 chips and get called by AK to bust me out of my 8th sitngo in a row.

If I have a set, I'm probably going to bet large, and I would have lost in each case as well. The 99 was a bad beat, that won't happen 9 out of ten times, but playing the A9 was probably a mistake. If I started playing hands like that (since you never let on about the number of players, I assumed a full table), I'd just get up and take a long break from poker. Of course, that for me lasts about a day. Just play your game, stay tight and it will all turn around.

There were 5 players left and I was in the small blind. It would have been an instant fold preflop had I not been in the small blind. And I would have folded it postflop also had I not been shortstacked and in need of doubling.

And there were already 4 people in the pot so if everyone had folded I would have won big also.

Fold your small pairs to any raise.

Oh, and 600 is a reasonable stack when blinds are 75/150 and there is only 10,000 on the table. Maybe you'll raise the small pair yourself, but you should definitely be folding to a bet at this point.

I usually try to limp in for 1 bet if possible, if the bets are too huge behind me, or the raise in front of me is more than I can confidently call, I fold. Like Sam Farha in the world series, came in with short raise with 22, then it was raised and reraised (all by pocket pairs), Sammy chose to give it up, cuz he figured there was just better stuff out there. (of course a 2 flopped, and neither of the other two made a set with their pockets). Anyway, follow his example.

So if you do limp in and catch a piece of it on the flop, and the board is rainbow, no possible flushes, I so play em. If the board is threatening, I make some waves with a sizeable bet, one that chasers wouldnt want to call...but probably not all in, unless I was short stacked.

So thats my two cents on the issue. Good day.
