| I played my first tourney, ever, at PokerPages.com, this morning. I'm not sure what all happened, as things went really fast. All I can say is that I played tighter than a fish's fanny until there were only four of us left, then I loosened up a bit. When the table was down to only two of us, I had about 6,000 and my opponant had about 14,000. I once again tightened up a bit and didn't play anything but fairly strong hands, of which I played very heavy and aggresively. His first real mistake was calling my 8,000 all in with an ace/king/ace flop. He had a boat (kings full of aces), but I had four aces. His last mistake was to try and back me down with an all in on a hand that I honestly don't remember the make of. Too excited, I suppose. All I remember of that last hand was thinking, " No way! Hasn't this guy been paying attention?" I'd been doing little to nothing, other than paying blinds and folding, for several minutes! I called him and took all of his chips, end of story. This is certainly beginners luck, surely helped by four aces, so I'm not going to read anything into it, albeit. It was indeed a great change of pace from the "see ya at the river, no matter what" play money tables I've lately been struggling with. I'll keep playing at PokerPages, for practice, but in all honesty. Tournament play is not what I'm really looking for. Don't want to be a pro. I'm simply wanting to someday steadily earn a few extra bucks on the side. My first post to this forum was a whopping success. Many replies and lots of great advice. It's already payed off in nothing short of pure excellence, IMHO. Thank you all! Tom... | ||

| I think that playing tight heads up was a mistake, but it sounds like you played a good tourney. Congratulations. When you're heads up, you want to avoid doing anything too predictable as a good heads up player will slaughter a rock. If I were playing you and observed that behaviour I'd be folding every time you came out swinging and I'd steal every single blind from you that I could until you either changed gears or gave me all of your money. Heads up play is a delicate beast. And really, you can't expect the guy to get rid of his kings full head up. | ||
