I'm playing a home game tonight. Most of the players have no clue what there doing really, only 2-3 good players tops. I'm wondering, what are the most obvious of the tells? I'm not asking for an essay on it because I don't want to make you waste your time... Butalot of the players never played in a live game, so they should give good Tells away, Like Breathing deep and stuff, what does that indicate?

Well if they're breathing deep and stuff, they're probably having a great time!!......OH, you're talking about poker.......nevermind.

Well depending on how easily they give off tells (because even the beginners are capable of refraining from giving too much away); I would say that some of the obvious tells would include, trying to bet too quickly might indicate a strong hand; picking up chips prematurely could indicate that they will be calling a bet and are not trying to fake anybody. A change in someone's posture (like suddenly sitting straight up in the chair) would tell me that they held a good hand. Someone who suddenly starts talking anxiously and in excess during the hand could indicate a monster!

**If a player was trying to give someone a mixed signal as to acting like their hand was weak when it really wasn't, and vice versa......the tells mentioned above may be used by a player who has had more experience in poker as they might try to use reverse tells. But you probably won't be dealing with anyone that fancy!

As far as not having a good hand or one that has not connected...........The same could hold true if one of the players in your home game was to try and fold prematurely....that to me would indicate that they have all intentions of folding; and if they show any disgust AT ALL, whether in their voice or in their gestures, would also tell me that maybe they just got outdrawn, or they didn't connect to their own drawing hand. (something like that).

wk players w/ lit to no exp. will probably act the opp of there hand wk when strong etc against comp this poor solid play shld be enough 2 get the $ if u r not and every day player spending time looking 4 that "magic" tell will take away from your game concentrate on playing well and minimizing your mistakes it will be more profitale then looking 4 tells that u dont know how 2 interpert str8 forward solid play will get the $ in a spot like ur talking about

I will expand on Donkey X's post since he apparently doesn't have all the vowel keys on his keyboard. :o)

Most of your tells can be simplified into weak means strong or strong means weak. The theory is that someone who has a monster hand wants you to call, so why would they do something to make you fold? Someone who makes an aggresive bet and then stares you down, is more than likely playing a hand that doesn't want your call so he is trying intimidate you. Someone who delicately sets their bet in and stares meekly at the table may have a strong hand and is trying not to scare you out. There are a lot of specific tells such as a player immediately glancing at their chips after looking at their cards usually has a strong hand, but I won't get into those as is sounds like you are just looking for general ideas. Remember, no tell is 100% accurate and solid play will usually be enough to put you ahead of most of your inexperienced opponents. Good luck!

I don't agree that all tells are 'weak means strong and vice versa.' It depends on what type of home game you're playing in. If it's a semi-serious game (say college kids who can win or lose a couple hundred a session) then yes, the general rule outlined above applies. But if it's just a social game involving a bunch of senior citizen ladies, then weak means weak and strong means strong.
But in general, in most of these loose weak homegames, tells aren't all that important anyways because you typically get 3 or more callers on the river. So someone bets and you pick up a tell that he's weak. But in these games, you'll probably have two callers before it gets to you. Now your read on his tell is worthless because you can't call unless you can beat the two other callers.
The way to beat these types of games is pure mathematics. Fold your losers and have them pay you off on your winners. Very simple formula that will not translate well into casino play above the 10/20 level.

If a player glances at his chips when the cards come out, it means he's got a really good hand. If he becomes stone still when waiting for you to call and looks away it means he has a monster-good hand. If he stops breathing after a bet, he's usually bluffing. Those are the biggest ones.

Lately I've been watching players correct their posture.
Shows the desire to pay attention.

Thanks everyone, I had all these guys read like books, One guy folded too much, another guy folded almost any time when the board was scary, the other guy raised every time.. few more too, but anyway... I also picked up some tells on certain players like sitting up straiter and such, A few players used the reverse psychology every time-Acting Strong when weak, and others didn't, I adjusted my game perfectly to there styles of play and ended up- up about 135$ taking all there money, hehehe ;)... At the end I also played a lot of hands because I had these guys read so good, I knew when I was beat and when I had them beat... Is that a good strategy you think?

Yep...I'm often guilty of that. When I'm tired I stop paying attention to the other players on hands I intend to fold. Then when I have a good hand I look at them and sit up a little. This is a signal to me that it is time to call it a day.
