| As somebody who has only been playing hold'em for 4 months now I am looking for help from all you more experienced players out there. I play a lot of NL sit-n-go tournys online and I notice that MOST players seem to really over value a pocket Ace. Many of these players will hold an Ace/ANYTHING (suited or not) and bet them all the way to the river on a full 10 person table. I know the value of a pocket Ace goes up when the table is down to the last few players but as I say these folks think they are the absolute nuts EVERY time they get one, even on a full table. My question is this: what would you more experienced players consider is the minimum "kicker" card (please tell me for suited AND non suited) with your pocket Ace before you would even consider betting out with. Would you raise pre-flop with it, or just limp in? Thanks in advance for any answers. Gary Toptwo | ||

| I'm not an expert. But, I'll play AJs and AQo. In late position I might play ATs if there are some limpers. | ||

| I think it ALL depends on texture and position. If a player is in late position and can see a flop cheaply (esp. with more than 2 limpers in front) AXs is a very playable hand as long as you can LAY DOWN top pair. What you're looking for is the flush, flush draw, trips, or two pair. As far as AXo goes, I don't like anything less than AJ unless its a blind steal situation; and for that matter AJ has probably cost me more than it has made me. For example, you want to raise with AJo because it doesn't play well against multiple players, but if someone comes over the top of you the only option you have is to fold in my opinion. (At least that has happened to me the last 2 times I've played it) As far as texture goes in relation to these hands, if you feel there is a good chance of a large raise from a player yet to act I think they are absolutely unplayable unless you are very large stacked and can afford to see some flops and take that players stack if the flop hits you. Thats my take Will | ||

| Will summed it up pretty well. In a NL tournament I won't touch AJ or AQ in early position unless the table is very passive. This is pretty rare except for maybe the first round or two. If you are shortshtacked and about to be blinded out then you might have to play a hand like that, but in general play when you're not in immediate danger then suitedness doesn't really matter. In a NL tournament you are there to survive. You can't play trap hands or you'll get yourself knocked out eventually. If you are in late position you can sometimes bring A,T to A,Q in for a raise, but I'm usually hoping to win the pot right there. If someone comes over the top of me I would fold those hands. | ||

| It really depends. In a very loose passive game, I'll limp under the gun with A2s, but in a very tight agressive game I'll throw away A8s in early position. In late position I'll call with any suited ace if there are a lot of players in the hand on an easy game, but in a hard game I'll throw away A7 and down in late position too. I'll always try to steal with a suited ace. Unsuitedaces are even bigger pigs. Generally I'll fold AT in any position, though I might play AT or even A9 on the button in the right situation and I'll often steal with any ace given the right circumstances. On the BB I'll defend with a small ace only in certain spots and in the SB I'll limp with most aces if there are a lot of players in the hand, but in that case I'm really looking to hit my hand twice. If it's a tough game I might raise with A8, A9, or AT to try and push a good player off a hand like AJ or AQ if an ace comes, but only if I know I'll have a shot at folding somebody. Generally speaking I'll avoid anything less than AJ | ||
