I got my wish...oops!, dan, 1. Sep 2003 03:08

I was playing a Freeroll tournament at Peppermill in Reno. I was in the money (top 20) with 18 players left, but I wanted to get in the top three and try to win it all. Problem is I was low on chips and the blinds were going up quickly. So, I was a little over three big bets to my stack when I received Ad8d in middle position. The table was EXTREMELY TIGHT (they were turning coal to diamonds down at the other end), except for the BB. He had been moved to my table about 15 hands ago, and had played in the last 10 hands, winning about seven of them which had him at a healthy chip lead. I had still figured him for a semi tight player because he mostly just caught some really good hands. Now, the player UTG is really shorted stacked and goes ALL IN. So I think about it and call his not complete raise over the BB, hoping to lure him in. Everyone else folds(surprise) and BB calls.

At this point, I really have the BB on nothing, having watched him for the last ten hands and seeing all his cards. My goal the moment that the UTG player went all in was to draw the BB so I could double up. So, that was my strategy.

Flop comes 6d 10c Ah. I have the backdoor flush draw and A high. But I check because his betting style leads me to believe he will bet this and try to get me to leave. He bets, I raise, and he calls. Turn comes 8s. I have two pair, and since I have one big bet left + change I bet. He raises me my last 150 and I go ALL IN.

He then turns over 10s 6h. He caught two pair as well. UTG shows KQ(since next hand he was probably going to be all in anyway, I felt I had him beat as well).

River card is the 6c. Full house for BB...and a little stunned feeling in my mind. But, as I thought about my actions a few hours later, I got exactly what I wished for...unfortunately he was still on his rush.

But, the question: did I play this wrong with the BB coming up and should I have figured him for two pair? (Assumed he has only lower pair after he called my raise on the flop.) Lemme know what you think...and be cruel or nice...I'm used to cruel more...remember, I play poker.

I think you played it fine. Despie middle position, why not play a suited Ace versus the randomness of what might come up in the next few hands when you're stack is even shorter? And then going all in on the 2-pair...you had the guy beat, but couldn't expect his full house to hit.

Hey dan-

Given the situation, I think you played it fine. Was this a limit tourney? It sounds like it... If only it were NL, you could have gone all-in preflop, which would have been ideal at this point.

Really, the BB had no reason to call ANY raise preflop with a T6o; he shouldn't have been in the hand at all. This is not what I would call a tight player.

Yeah, It was a Limit tournament. At least it was a Freeroll tournament. Plus, I finally discovered the only Omaha Hi/Lo game in Reno. A nice group of passive, loose, older gentlemen. :)
